fuel pressure question

I have an 88 gt, with the usual mods. I have my fuel pressure set at 39psi with the vacuum off. Now for the question- I installed the adjustable fuel pressure regulator and autometer fuel pressure guage. when i turn the key on the pressure goes up to 40, and maintains at idle, but as soon as i turn my car off the guage drops right to zero and sometimes after that if i leave the car off for like an hour or so, it will crank for a few seconds before it will finally start. but if i cycle the key a few times it will build the pressure and start right up. any help would be greatly appreciated. please email me at [email protected] thanks

Sounds like the fuel pump is allowing the pressure to drop. The pump normally holds pressure in the line after it is turned off. As pumps wear out they hold less pressure back. You might have an old pump. This won't effect the pump while it is running, it just makes for more difficult starts, as you have found out.
