Fuel problem

My car recently just sputtered and died while driving, after checking the obvious gas gauge and any lose connections, we diagnosed the problem as a bad fuel pump. Just put in the new fuel pump and still nothing, it will actually start and run for a couple of seconds but is running off of starter fluid.

Do I have a clogged fuel line or is there something you have to do to the fuel pump to sort of prime it? I am not getting any fuel...Any suggestions?

how is your fuel filter?

maybe your float is stuck in the up position and the carb thinks the bowl is full of fuel?

Can you physically pull back on the throttle linkage and see gas squirt into the carb?

Blow air into the fuel line running back to the tank to make sure it is not clogged (listen at the gas cap). Your tank may have a lot of trash in it and it is clogging the sock filter located on the end of your fuel line inside the gas tank.

The fuel filter is brand new, and when you pull back the linkage you can hear a noise being produced but no gas is being sprayed into the carb. If that makes any sense.

for kicks and giggles.
If you want to rule out the carb.
You can disconnect the out line from the fuel pump before the carb and hold it in a small gas tank while someone turns the engine over to see if any gas comes out.

If gas comes out , then focus on the carb.
if no gas comes out, then the problem is between the fuel pump and the fuel tank.

warning: be careful, no smoking, no sparks near gas.

Thanks for the input and I did try that and I got no gas out of the out line, so at least I have narrowed it down to the fuel pump and the tank My guess is because the fuel pump is brand new the problem is a clogged fuel line or tank.

This will be my after work project. Does anybody have a clever way to blow out that fuel line??

Like mentioned earlier, pull the tank to pump line off and see if you can blow through it. (you should be able to blow bubbles into the tank) make sure you take the cap off 1st tho.

If you can't blow through it by mouth, you could try using your compressor and a blow gun to do it.

However, if this does fix the problem, it's only blowing crud back into the tank. You'll need to drop the tank and flush out the crud or else it's just going to happen again in another 100miles.

It could also be that the thing that actually activates the pump inside the timing cover could be broken off.

Cleared out the line with a compressor and nothing unusual came out and seemed to be pretty clean. Gas also flow very easily out of the tank when I disconnected the fuel line.

If the eccentric is off or broke would you still be able to slide the fuel pump arm freely?

it would slide in to position too easy.

Well it looks like I have to take off the timing chain cover and take a look, because when putting in the fuel pump it just slides right in.....
