Fuel pump eccentric question

My 347 long block (full roller valve train) did not come with the fuel pump eccentric and I need to locate and order one. I am using a new early style front timing cover with my setup. I found this eccentric on Summit, but apparently there is a 1 or 2 piece unit available. Which one do I need for my setup? Do these come with the dowel pin? If not, where do I get the right length pin? Thanks for quick replies as I am trying to get the right parts ordered today.

The 1 piece eccentric you are looking at is the correct one, as for the dowel pin I would be surprised if you could not get one from Summit or a cam manufacturer. The eccentric usually does not come with one.

Yeah, cam maker usually supplies both with the cam. The shop that built the motor may have the long pin. Or find someone who has ordered a cam recently and didn't need the pin. Maybe you'll get lucky and find someone here. I have a spare short pin, not long one. Sorry.

Dude I had a hell of a time finding a pin that worked. I ended up making my own and it only took about 20 minutes. Go to Lowes or some other hardware store and get a grade 8 bolt that is at least 3 1/2 inches long and the right diameter. Cut off the head and threaded part and use the unthreaded section as your pin. Grind it to the necessary length and you should be fine/

As far as I know, the type of eccentric is largely dependent on the length of the cam dowel. There is a short and a long dowel; the one-piece eccentric uses the long dowel and the two-piece needs the shorter dowel. Also, do it the right way and get a real 5/16" cam dowel.

Thanks for the replies guys. Given what I have into this engine build, I will make sure I get a real pin, but can appreciate the creative suggestion of making one from a bolt. If anyone has the long pin and not using it, I would appreciate and gladly pay for the stamp to have it mailed to me

It might be easier to check out a parts store and see what they have. A last resort would be the Ford parts counter. I had a long pin that cam with Crane roller cam, but I needed it couldnt find it.

BTW, I'm pretty sure its 5/16". If you get a dowel specifically for a Ford, it wont matter.

NO NO NO do not use the 1 piece ecentric with late model block and early timing cover. It will not fit and destroys the back of the timing cover. Go to a local machine shop and ask for a parts kit for a late model carburated 302. It will come with a 2 piece ecentric. You will not have to deal with the dowel pin. The 1 piece is about .05 to think and will grind the timing cover to pieces. And I do speak from experience. Those timing covers are over 100 bucks.

Why not just go to a junk yard? I was fortunate enough to just pull the timing cover off of my old engine and put it on the new, but you can find 2 piece eccentrics for a dime a dozen. I might even have one laying around here somewhere. I know I dug one out of a 76 ford truck with a 302........I'll check

I was able to get a dowel pin from a machine shop yesterday, so I was feeling great about buttoning up my engine this weekend . But now I'm concerned and confused . I ordered the eccentric from Summit and they only had the 1 piece listed (at least that I could find). Just to confirm, here is what I have:

Early style front cover
1 piece eccentric
roller valve train (not sure if this matters)
block - not sure if it's early or late, but probably late given it's roller valve train.

I called some local junkyards last weekend looking for an eccentric and none of them have them. Most yards in my area deal with late model stuff, not many older mechanical systems around. I will call the machine shop I went to yesterday and see if he carries the 2 piece eccentric I guess. Please double confirm that what I have is not compatible. Thanks guys!

I had the same problem with the 1 piece hitting the timing cover. I took the both eccentrics to the maching shop and had them machine the new one down to match the older one.

If your block is factory roller, then it is most definitely latemodel.

There you go I called several different machine shops about this part kit. The could all get it, however only 1 actually knoew what I was talking about.

Hope this helps. If you machine the part IT MUST BE DAMN CLOSE TO PERFECT. you do not have a harmonic dampner on the cam and it will eventually mess with the cam if its out of balance. and again yes I can tell you what happens to almost. Friggen sucks.

It was done on a lathe so it's fine. Even if its not perfect I doubt its going to throw of my cam.

Got a 2 piece eccentric - is it going to be noisy?

I picked up a 2 piece eccentric from my local machine shop (man, gotta love car enthusiasts, these guys are super helpful and practically gave me the part). I compared the 2 piece versus 1 piece and there is definately a large difference. The 1 piece was such an interference fit that the timing cover would not sit flush against the engine, so there was no mistaking that it would have big issues. The 2 piece does not use a dowel pin, it has a tab bent in toward the cam gear which fits in the dowel plug hole. I torqued the eccentric to the reccommended 40 - 45 ft lbs. The design of the 2 piece has an eccentric which sits in a round cup. The round cup spins loosely around the eccentric. When dry, it seems pretty noisy and I don't really understand the design intention. Are these things noisy? Anyone else running one? Is the outer ring suppose to spin freely like this? I can't see how it would tighten up anymore.

The year model of the block makes no difference which eccentric you need, the front of the block is the same as far as timing cover location is concerned. The difference is the block side of the interior for the timing set. Some covers work with the older 1 piece eccentric, others don't.

I had one on my '65. They are just stamped steel so you cant expect a real precise fit(they are hardened, BTW). They are noisy in your hand, but buried in an engine and coated with oil they make no sound.

Now I have both that arent being used since I found it easier to just use an electric pump.
