Fuel pump woes...

I recently took my back seat out again to move some 10 holes from place to place and I've been driving around without it on. I've noticed that its whining like CRAZY. When I'm driving along and shifting gears I can hear the pitch of the whine change. Have any of you used like a cheapo home depot gauge to check fuel pressure? I was even thinking about buying a cheapo tire gauge and screwing it onto the schraeder valve. What SHOULD my fuel pump be putting out all the time? Secondly... if I do need a fuel pump, should I just replace it with another internal like a 100+lph?

I dont know too much about fuel pumps, but I say just replace it with a new stock one and forget about it. In my experience dealing with fuel pumps is way too much of a pain in the a$$ to continue to tinker with.

aww cmon... unbolting the tank, hitting the little thing that holds the pump in with a brass punch... possibility of explosion, thats FUN STUFF.

also im wondering about a larger one because a v8 swap is in my future very very soon... but in the meanwhile i need something to feed the mighty 2.3...

V8 Swap? You dont think it would be a better idea to just buy a different 5.0L Mustang altogether? I would think it would probably be a lot cheaper once everything is said and done. Not to mention a lot less work and you would have not one but two Mustangs. Is your 2.3 right now N/A or turbocharged?

lot less work? pfft. already swapped to a t5... already have 5.0 10" brakes, front sway bar, rear sway bar. spindles, eibach springs, shocks, 3 row radiator, msd ignition, blaster coil, rear lower & upper control arms, 8.8" rear end with 3:73's, aluminum driveshaft, subframe connectors welded in, front and rear strut tower/shock braces, etc etc...

all i need is a motor with basic accessories (power steering, alternator) I dont want AC or smog equipment (smog isnt an issue... have that covered) i need the engine harness, and fuel rail, and a computer. I've been looking around and I've found an 87 5.0 that I will be picking up in january. people who complain about too much work are just LAZY. i enjoy working on my car... almost more than i do driving it. that will all change after i add 4 more cylinders though. TEE HEE HEE.

my 2.3 has a new block bored .030, wiseco pistons, crower rods, head ported mildly with lunati valve train, ranger roller cam, ported lower intake, gutted upper intake, and a 5.0 throttle body. the head has been milled to raise compression so it will run good in NA form... but open up the CC's a little and slap a turbo on it and its good to go. i will be putting this motor on ebay soon after I take it out and inspect it and clean it up. I shouldnt have any problem getting like $350-500 for it I'm sure. I have all the reciepts for everything I purchased so the skeptic buyer who doesnt believe the internals can be reassured. the motor has less than 15k miles on it since it was built. I dont want a turbo car, I've been in a 2.3T, and although I think its great and all, it just doesnt have my attention like a v8 does. I'm not doing it to be like "everyone else"... in fact I have a notch and putting gt skirts and bumpers, a saleen wing, and a 3" raised cowl on it... which is NOT like everyone else...

Fair Enough. I probably enjoy on my car just as much as I enjoy driving it as well. Rebuilding my motor last summer was probably the most fun I have ever had doing anything. My only problem is that I want it to be done right then and there so i can test it out. Back to your fuel pump thing, if you are running a stock 2.3 pump right now then you are going to want to change it anyways once the big 302 is in there. So, why not buy a 5.0 fuel pump now, put it in, then it will be ready to go when the motor swap is done. I think a 5.0 pump should work fine with a 2.3 motor. I guess your other option would be to just deal with the noise for a few more weeks, you said you were getting your 5.0 in January and then once you swap the motor, swap the pump as well. As far as things like fuel pressure and all that I really cant help ya.

Ya i say just swap in a 5.0 fuel pump...that should do the trick (*snicker, eehhehe, a 2.3 and 5.0 fuel pump are the same ehehhehe*) I'd say you havent been lacking in the rest of your car , as for building it up for a 5.0 swap. DONT start here, are you just gonna drop a 5.0 in there and call it a day, or are you gonna mod it? If its the ladder, i would put in a bigger feul pump now, becuase down the road, if you want to go blower, stroker, turbo or just bigger N/a your gonna HAVE to put a bigger pump in. Save yourself the trouble.

The fuel pump does whine(long before you pulled your seat) it is adequate for your na. It will whine a high pitch when you flow rate is low, and if you're really using fuel(wot, 5500rpm) the pump is just barely noticeable. The car companies put all that deadening in so you don't hear the car working and freak out.

Ever stood next to a running Chevy truck, you can here that pump going like crazy, I used to be able to hear the pump on my '93 if I was out of the car..

i know it makes noise... just like my power steering pump... but i never heard it go up and down like before...

I would agree and suggest you upgrade your pump, especially if your going to put a 5.0 and mod it. Why not get a Walbro 225 in tank pump. They are pretty reasonable at about $100 and people have good results with them. I plan on putting one in my car shortly before the stock one craps out.
