My fuel pump on 89 convertble makes kind of loud (to me) hum when I turn on the key. Is this normal or is it in need of replaceing? It,s got about 120,000 miles on it.

Amount of fuel in the tank and how fast it builds pressure are also factors.

You'll hear the pump when you turn the key on but should fade off. If the pump is still humming loudly when you are standing outside the of the car then you should be concerned. This is exactly what mine did (humming all the time) before it let me sitting after about 6 months of putting it off. I'm guessing that the pump is a factory one. Also, I had about 40,000 more miles than you.

if it's for a short time when your first turn your key to on, its normal. thats your pump building up pressure.

I think that depends on if you have been
driving it for a long time or it is a new car
to you.

If you have listened every morning foreaver and now it
is louder, your pump
is probably dieing. Have you let it run out of gas
lately? If the pump runs dry you cooked the bearings.
