Fuel tank sending unit?

I am going to upgrade my fuel tank to a 70’s 22-gallon tank; I know that I will need a new sending unit. Has anyone had a problem with the after market sending units? I have heard that the repos don’t work very well. What is your experience? I just don’t want to have to do this over if the repo's are junk, I will just buy a NOS one to start with.

Just put a repo sender in my 69/351c and have have no problems.

I'm using a repro in my '70 convertible, and if there is any functional difference from NOS it would be news to me. For the price of NOS, you could buy almost 4 reproduction units (not that you'd have to). I have a new in the box '70 repro sending unit if you're interested.

70 22 Gallon Tank

I have a new '70 22 gallon tank at the powdercoaters right now. I wasn't happy with the finish so they are re-coating it for me. I have a 65 Mustang and I was going to retrofit the tank into my car, but I found out I can't. I'm running an Aeromotive A1000 pump which requires a sump. I didn't feel like cracking the new tank open to install fittings, baffles, and a sump etc. I've decided to design and build a custom tank and possibly go even bigger.

Anyway, I am left with a brand new sending unit, new rubber gasket, new snap ring, and a new powdercoated fuel neck that was trimmed a bit for a '65. The tank and the fuel neck were powdercoated gloss black and it'll look bitchin' when they're done...I'm sure it will be this time. Well, let me know if you're interested. I'll sell everything to you for what I got it for...as long as you make a deal with me for what I got into the coating, and cover the shipping.

I just put one in that seems to be way off. It shows empty with 5 gallons in the tank & when full, the guage goes way past the full line.

Your float rod is bent, pull it out and have someone watch the guage, and you can bend it til it's right.

I would have thought that too, but the guage goes from the empty mark all the way past full.. If the rod was just bent, it would go from say 1/4 to over full.. see what I mean?

Your float is too high at empty, and too low at full.

the longer the rod from the pivot to the float, the more travel it will have from full to empty.

Yours appears to have the proper travel, it doesn't read low enough at empty but it read too high at full.

So your length is probubly OK, but the angle is wrong. You need to straighten your rod a bit. Then the float will be higher at both empty and full.

That may sound wrong, but it's right.

The unit ended up being defective... What a PITA, I needed to drain the tank again & I'm putting a new float & sock onto the old sending unit. So much of the aftermarket stuff is junk.
