I plan on replacing my fuel pump on my 1991 LX 5.0 convertible this weekend, which involves removing the gas tank. My wife called around to find out how much it would cost to have a "professional" do it. (She doesn't like me working on the car because I have a bad back). Anyway a mechanic told her it would be $185.00 labor because the axle has to be dropped for the gas tank to be removed!

Does the axle have to be dropped?

Thanks

Larry

you dont need to remove the axle, the tank sits behind the axle. ive taken my tank out of my coupe a couple of times to fix leaks and didnt remove the axle. put the car up on jack stands and put the jack under the tank and unbolt the straps and let it down. its not that hard to do, also helps if you have someone to help you.

Nope, no axle drop needed.

Just a jack to support the tank and it comes down fairly easy. Siphon the gas out first

False info there. The gas tank is 3 bolts. 1 bolt on 1 strap, 2 bolts on the other strap. Lower it slowly with a floorjack, and you'll be ready to rock.

Either that shop has complete idiots working for them or your wife lied about the axle drop to scare you out of doing it yourself.
If they had to drop the axle to replace the fuel pump, it would cost a hell of a lot more than $185 labor.

isn't there a little hatch door under the back seat to allow you to the sending unit.

I don't remember seeing a "door" under my back seat in my '88GT when I installed a power junction box under there for my stereo system.

Think about where the Fuel Tank was positioned in the Tempo compared to the Stang, if there was an access door to get to the Fuel Pump in the Stang it would have to be in the Hatch Floor and there is not.

i dont think they have a door there, but if they had an access door it would need to be in the trunk/hatch area

edit: beat me to it

There is no door. I've had my interior out plenty of times.

Some guys cut square holes in their floor in the rear so they can change pumps without dropping the tank. Not a bad idea really. Tack weld a couple hinges and a latch and easy fuel pump changes!!!
