Fuggin H. Balancer wont come off!!!!!!!!!!!!

What the hell is Ford's problem. I tried everything to get the bolt to the balancer off, but it wont budge. I cracked the timing chain cover and the oil pan trying to get something to keep it from turning while I breaker barred the stupid thing. Nothing is working. Time to set car on fire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make sure you got the washer out of there. I did the same thing once. My dad went out there and messed with it and found the washer still in there. The washer on the balancer bolt is the one im talking about. Are you using a puller? It shouldnt turn with it unless that washers still in there. I broke a puller once with that washer still in there. Hope this helps.

But if you do have all the hardware off and the silly thing still won't come off.... put a decent amount of tension on the puller then tap the balancer with an air hammer.

Smock - I put mine in 4th or 5th gear, crank on the e-brake, block the rear tires - and pull up with an 12" pull bar - it comes free. Once you get it free, be sure to remove the washer before you put the puller on it.

he's talking about the actual balancer bolt,not the balancer itself.you'll need to lock the flywheel or have an impact to remove the bolt.

I second the use of an impact. Mine was really seized so I ended up pulling the radiator and putting an impact wrench on it, came right out.

Yep... I misread. Impact is definitely the way to go for that stubborn bolt.

I've never needed an impact before. I'm just going to use the balancer off my 85 and that thing gave me no problems. Its easy to say impact, but the Doiley aint got one in his garage like most guys. I have the car in first and the tires blocked but its an auto and I think the converter is letting go. To make things worse, the outer ring fell off because the rubber was so bad. I think I'm screwed!!

I think I have a solution. I will use military safety wire and thread it through a hole and then loop it around something so it pulls on the balancer as I torque down on the bolt. Hopefully that keeps it from moving while I try to budge that damn bolt. Wish me luck, its pitch black out. WIsh I was Riddick right now!

Smock, i thought you had a newer SFI balancer?

some guys with more gusto than i have put a breaker on the bolt and bumped the starter (dont start it) - the breaker hits the ground and breaks the bolt free.
like i said, i dont have the guts to try it.

if you have some pipe around, you can extend the handle on your breaker bar....more leverage.

I do, on my 85 and thats the one that came right off and I'm now going to put it on my 95. Good news, after latching down the balancer with 3 sets of double-wired .040 safety wire, it finally stopped moving and the bolt is off. Wish I had tried that before I put a small crack in the oil pan lip and the timing chain cover. Lets hope when its all fixed, it doesnt leak oil everywhere.

i'm glad I read this thread before I removed mine. actually, i'm taking off the romac b/c i'm selling the stang(hint hint). so, once the balancer bolt and washer is off, you use the balancer puller? haven't removed one before.

More uses for safety wire...and I thought it was only good to keep bolts from falling out of airplanes...

As a former aircraft mechanic, I thought I had heard of every possible use for safety wire, but you just added a new one to my book...

I was helping a friend of mine put underdrive pulleys on his '03 Mach 1 a few months ago and we bumped the starter to losen it. Nice and easy, the bolt came right of. New pulleys went on and all was good. I think it's the probably the best way to do it.

That is exactly what I did...came off no problems...in actuality it didn't take much torque to break it loose...not as much as I thought it would anyways...

Well, the project is finally done. In the middle of the night with no light I have successfully shade-tree'd my balancer swap and all is good. It purrs like a kitten now, and I even cut off the end of the heater hose to eliminate the leak. Tomorrow I will use that tempt fix to get me to the parts store for good heater hose and then I'll drive around to elavuate the fix. Crossin the old fingers.

Funny you should mention that. I was helping a buddy put his car back together and he did the final torque on the balancer bolt. We left for a quick test run and started getting a terrible vibration. Thought we must've put on the bad balancer that had been sitting there near all the good parts. Brought it back and decided to swap the balancer......then we went out in the driveway with flashlights hunting the bolt and breaker bar

Sometimes you just have to learn the easy tricks the hard way

My balancer bolt came right out with 1/2" breaker bar, then used puller to pull of the balancer from the crank, no sweat at all and it was the stock balancer so i know it had never been pulled off before me.
