functional side scoops?

They might have MADE functional side scoops. But the car did not come with stock functional scoops. I had a 98 GT. It was the same as my 02 GT now, plastic honey comb 'grill'. It functions as looking kinda cool if thats what you meant.

The early SN95's had a honeycomb that would actually allow air to flow inside. But i don't think the duct went down into the wheel well. It might have gone ina bit and just stopped. I think Ford stopped using the "mesh" scoops in '97 as my buddy with a '96 Cobra had the scoops that would allow air in.
As for the 99_ stangs, there is nothing behind the scopps. It's just flat sheetmetal. You would need to do some major fabrication.

umm...what exactly do you need airflow at the rear of the car for anyway?...it's not like the rear brakes do enough to rate having cooling ducts...

I agree, I hate fake scoops, but making them functional for no good reason ain't the answer either.

I second the motion to either replace them with Bullitt side scoops, or remove them and fill in the area with fiberglass or something.
I'm going to do it myself, someday.
The only thing I don't like about the Bullitts is that you have to use 2-sided tape because they don't have the proper clamps like the stock ones do. I found out the hard way that you really need 2-sided tape. I lost one of mine when it fell off, and I haven't gotten around to getting a replacement, so I've still got the stock ones on.
I wonder if one can use epoxy or fiberglass, rather than 2-sided tape, for the Bullitt side scoops?

The rear brakes provide only a small percentage of the braking, thus don't require any additional cooling unless they arebeing upgraded and the car is going to be seriously raced. I agree with the above posts ... if you hate the sidescoops, then go Bullitt.

Yep, the 1994, 1995, and possibly some early 1996 Mustangs had functional side scoops that had an exhaust port side the rear fender well, just as you describe.
One can argue just how effective it was, but it was indeed functional.

forgot cooling down my brakes... i am considering the saleen sidescoops for looks. what do you guys think?
Made my side Scoops functional
I made my side scoops functional. I just bought saleen side scoops to rivit over the big opening so it has a cleaner look. once I rivited it on there I sealed the seam with some fiberglass and bondo'ed it to the frame of the car for a seamless look. I had 18 gauged steal welded behind it.

You need to direct the air to the brakes by venting it around the backside of the tire.

The Saleen scoops are functional. They do not blow air on the rear brakes, but with the full Saleen body kit it makes the car more aerodynamic and cuts down on wind resistance. At least that is what Saleen says.
Functional Side scoops
Its just blowing air through to the tire I don't need it to cool my rear brakes. There are alot of easyer ways to cool your rear brakes. I just wanted my fake scoop gone and let air flow through it..
