I have looked on line but haven’t found a gas cap replacement for my 71 Mach 1.
It is the flip open type attached pics.
Any ideas?

I made one for a 69 pop open cap out of a sheet of cork gasket material and glued it to the cap and it worked great ,i used a compass to make the inner circle and a outer circle and cut it out with an exacto knife

Thank you, good idea. Some mentioned using rubber but have to make sure it is gas and oil resistant.

I have posted similar post regarding gasket replacement.
The gasket on my 1971 Mach1 pop open gas cap is cracked and flattened. Believe it is the original.
I have finally decided as suggested in previous post to buy a piece of Nitrite rubber or cork and try and make my own.

What is the thickness I should buy? Can’t measure the gasket on the cap and if I try to take off it will break up.

You might ask the question on 7173mustangs.com, just a thought.

Give it a shot with whatever you got lying around. The production tolerances in 1971 were not all that critical. If you cut out some gasket material and it doesn't seat correctly just move to another material.

Here's a short-cut:

9030F - 1971-73 Mustang; Vented Gas Cap; With Retaining Cable; Running Horse Emblem

A superb reproduction of the standard 1971-73 Mustang vented gas cap including the running Horse emblem facing right. Manufactured to exact specifications and features a high quality chrome finish with black face and chrome trim.

I decided to make my own. I found 3/32” thick neoprene 12” x 12” sheet on Amazon for less than $5. My existing gasket measured 3/32” using a multimeter. Found that the diameter of a can of soup is just slightly larger than 2.5”. I marked it on the sheet of rubber and cut it using a exacto knife. Then found a socket that was an inch diameter used it for measuring and cutting the center hole. Not perfect but it seals very well. I stretched the rubber around the center and with a thin flathead screwdriver push under the lip.
I have attached a few pictures and below is the link to Amazon.
