New? Used? Repro? Is the seal on the cap uneven? The cap or filler may need a little careful mallet work on the inner lip to get the cap to seat evenly.
My aftermarket locking gas cap never did sit correctly. It either shows the horse with the front hoofs up in the air or the horse is upside down. So much for quality control.
Just use two cork gaskets between the filler neck and the body panel. You'll see that every now and then on a restored Mustang. Works well, and very hard to tell.
