After Christmas is over with, I'm finally going to buy my 4.10's. I'm getting the package from AmericanMuscle with the frpp 4.10's, speedcal, and oil. My question is, should I buy the Motive bearing kit that they offer on the site? My car has 74k miles on it.

even shorter answer.. no. you do not need new bearings.

Ford had to replace my pinion bearing and a few other bearings when they did my gear install.

The shop I'm going to is replacing my bearings. My car has 39,000 miles.

well it all depends on the condition of the bearings i only replace them on cars that are close to 100K or they look worn or damaged........but if you want reassurance then yes i would have them replaced

It's ALWAYS a good idea to do bearings when doing a ring/pinion install. Everything comes out anyway so it is just automatic....it would be silly not to regardless of the mileage.

It also makes setting the backlash and pinion depth much more accurate.

ive talked to two late model mustang performance shops in my area.. ironically.. evoulution performance, and performance evolution. ive dealt with both for over a year now, and talked to them about many many topics, such as bearings. each has done over 100 gear swaps, and "has never seen bad bearings on a mustang". yes they are right in front of your face, but its an unnessecary 80 dollars to spend. well i took there advice, im at 60k, and everything seems fine, and theres still 2 black stripes being laid everywhere i go. he said even on his 180k mile fox the bearings were still good. idk bout you guys, but im with them.

Doesn't matter if they have done 1000's of gear swaps. All it takes is one. And if you happen to be that one, I can guarantee you will be wishing you had spent that $80 on a bearing kit.

It's as cheap as insurance gets.

And like I said, shops that actually have professionally trained techs in regards to rear end work will automatically do bearings when doing a ring/pinion gear install no questions asked. Pinion depth, backlash, and preload are all critical measurements. Backlash is adjusted to within .001" increments and the pinion and carrier bearing's preload is measured in in/lbs.

New bearings make these critical measurements/adjustments much easier and much more accurate making for a more reliable, efficient, and quieter rear end.

Unless you're up to some pretty high mileage, there is no need to replace them. If you're going to do it anyway, PLEASE get the FORD parts and not Motive.

The Timken bearing kit for the 8.8" is the way to go.

Also if you have the money, I would recommend one of these:

I'd have to agree that you should replace your bearings only IF they are actually showing signs of wear. The comment that it only takes one mistake in a 1000 to make it worth the extra money and effort, is comparable to the same ratio of defective bearings in a batch of good ones. "You never know..." doesn't always cut it when it comes to replacing parts unnecessarily. There's always that chance of getting a bad part. Why replace known good bearings with bearings that have yet to be tempered and set?

My 2 cents...

Ok, here is another question, does anyone know of a reputable place in WV to have them installed? I was just thinking of having Midway Ford do the work, unless there is somewhere better to take it.
