gear question

if i get a set of gears do i need the whole kit or just the ring and pinion? would i need a new speedo tooth?

You need gears, fluid, crush collar, and posi-trac additive.

It is a good idea to do new pinion bearings, use new shims on the pinion, and possible a trc-lock rebuild kit.

Use the old pinion shim, especially if you use FRPP gears.

If the pinion heads are the same in depth. Mine were off by .001 so I went with a .001 smaller total shim thickness.

Usually with FRPP gears you will be within a very small amount of the stock depth and don't need to worry about it though.

You may need a set of carrier shims if your backlash is out of spec after the swap, but I doubt you will. That is a Ford only part AFAIK.

.001 is pretty thin. I got measurements around the pinion head that varied more than that (on the same head).

BTW, I would replace the axel bearings while you are in there. They are pretty cheap, and easy to do. Plus you save the mess of breaking back into the rear end to replace down the road.

You could rebuild the trac loc for the same reason (I did). But that might be overkill if your's is running well.
