Gear whine or ???

OK, I had FRPP 3.73 gears put in about 500 miles ago. On the highway at about 80+ mph (speedo is still off so this is 110+) I hear a whining. If i get off the gas it stops and comes back as soon as i feather the gas.

Now I thought it was that my rear suspension was causing something with the driveshaft before but i jsut got done rebuilding the rear end (new shocks, quads, LCA bushings (poly) and new UCA (free from a friend), and FMS C-springs.

Now I have not yet remove dthe D/S or changed the transmission mount yet. Any thoughts?

The gears are completely quiet below this speed.

If no noise when off throttle and at low speeds I would not be too concearned. My precision brang gearset 3.73's make a little noise on the highway..but just a wisper.

To me this is enough noise to keep me from maintaining a speed above 75/80 mph...

It is loud enough to be noticable and annoying.

Do you think my gears were not set up properly?

Will this eventually wear in and go away?

You need to find out. Take it to another shop, and have them check the pinion depth and backlash. Don't take it back to the same shop. They will just tell you that nothing is wrong because they will have to eat the cost of replacing the gears.

Somethings up...gears shouldn't whine...Gotta take your chances I guess or go back to the installer...which he prolly isn't going to like...taking it to another place is gonna cost you then your really gonna have to rub the other guys face in it...or once again eat it... sounds like a lose lose situation to me ???
I would think its only gonna get worse...I have only used FRPP gears tho...

u could have just got a set of gears that have been cut bad? u never know, check the pinion depth, if this is correct and the backlash is correct then dont worry about it

Here's another thought. Do you have the older FRPP 3.73 gears or the newer FRPP 3.73 gears. The newer style ones have different cut on the teeth for both strength and reduce gear noise. I have the older ones on mine (over 2 years now) and they do exactly what you described above. They did not get any louder and are completely quiet otherwise.

How can I tell if they are the newer or older gears? I didn't see them but I have the box they came in at home.

I have no problem with pulling the cover to check them out if I have to either.

Anways if the noise is only when above when on the throttle at 80+mph then I would say it isn't the 3.73 gear at all. Maybe your tranny.

I liked thinking it was the gears better... Good point though now the D/S is spinnig a buttleoad faster tahn it was... so the trans output is doing the same thing...

Other thoughts?

ANyone change the bearing on the output of the transmission? Is it something that makes it worth going into the whole trans to do? I see bearigns are like $8-$12...
