if my pinion depth is set incorrectly... can that not put as much power to the ground as if it were set correctly?

theres absolutely no gear whine...

i actually thought it was too loose... sometimes, not when i shift into a gear and then hit the gas, it only does it when say its in a 2nd gear and i start to slow down for a red light, so i let the RPM's hang and let the compression slow me down instead of the brakes, then it turns green as i'm slowing down so i hit the gas to accelerate again, i hear a clunk when i tap the gas.. sometimes its louder than others, but overall its not too bad or too often...

is that just drivetrain slap? or whats a good indication of it being too loose?
