gears t-5 2.95 vs. 3.??

so its time to give the t-5 a rebuild! now im stuck with a choice do i want 2.95 first gear or do i want a 3. 75 i think?? heard 2.95 is strong and holds more power is long and good for racing, now is there any that has driven both and have a prefrence on one??? i think im going towards the 2.95 and after that will come the rear to 3.73 diff. whats your opinion??? thx:SNSign:

First, it's a 2.95 Z-Spec or a 3.35 in a T5 unless it's a 4cylinder box.

As for what axle gears with a 2.95 box....anything less than 4.10's is a waste. 4.10's behind a 2.95 geared T5 will give sligthly less overall 1st (a good thing IMO, but many will disagree) but more 2nd, 3rd and 4th than either box with 3.73's and the extra deep 5th of the Z-Spec T5 makes the 4.10's nearly identical for rpms at highway speeds when compared to the 3.73 in a regular T5.

An added bonus is the rpm drop between shifts with the Z-Spec is very low (it is a close ratio box). Get it to the power and keep it there. Mmmmm........yummy....

I would also suggest going with the 2.95 gear. I have also heard that it is stronger (higher torque rating) I have a 3.35 1st in my car and man first gear is gone in a flash especially on a nitrous launch.

I got a 2.95 with 3.73 and love it, Great power out of the hole, and 160+ with ez. Cruise at 60 at about 2 grand, 70 is about 2,300 to 2,500. 80 is 3,000rpm.

I run a 2.87 in my TKO 600 (close enough to 2.95), and i must say, i agree. If you aren't willing to switch to 4.10's do NOT use the 2.95 trans. First gear is like an hour long compared to the 3.35.

If i could do it again, i would go with the tko 500 with the 3.27 first and the .68 OD (instead of the .64).
I realize two different transmissions, but as far as feel goes, the ratio comparisons are relevant.

BTW, alot of people brake a Z trans just as easily as a stock t5, you may really want to consider a G force or tremec for your money, spend now save later instead of spend twice.

agree. i had a 3.35 T5 in the coupe i built, and even with the 3.27's first gear was pretty short. i have a 2.95 T5 now, LOVE it.

i have a 2.95 box with 3.90s in the rearend. first gear still wants to spin on the street. but each gear is alot closer than a regular t5, you can definatly tell a difference b/w a 3.35 gearbox and a 2.95

the whole 2.95 gearset has a higher 1st gear and each gear is a higher ratio and closer together, and the OD is higher also which helps on the highways.

overall a GREAT steet gear box.

I have the original T-5 with the 3.35 1st gear ratio. I hate it for street driving. By the time I let off the clutch in first, I'm hitting second (2200rpm shift). I'm running 3.73 gears out back. I've drove cars with the 2.95 and it feels much better.

2.95 tranny with 4.10 in the rear in my car also

but I wouldn't do the 4.10's unless your motor makes good power in the upper rpm range
