I just got off the phone with a shop that I wanted to install 4.10 gears on my 04 GT. I was quoted 275.00 for labor, and another 500 for a chip to re-cal my speedo after the gears were installed. My question is would it be worth it to just get a handheld tuner such as a diablo or SCT and just get the gears installed and then re-cal the speedo myself? Correct me if I am wrong but can't you do more tuning that just a speedo re-cal with the handheld tuners? And aren't they under 500.00? so wouldn't this be the best bet?

get a tuner. you can get a new SCT-2 for $379 with 3 custom tunes from JMS CHIPS. thats where i got mine, there are plenty of other places that carry them. also a speedo re-cal tool can be bought for $99.

just taking from the fact they wanted $500 for a speedcal, you might want to consider another shop

The labor cost sounds pretty good to me for a gear install (assuming it's a reputable shop that can prove they do good work.) I was quoted in the $400's from the reputable places around here, but Tucson is notorious for inflated prices on everything.

I would definately not take them up on their offer for the chip. I just ordered a brothers speed-cal thing for 89 bucks (100.54 shipped.)

A handheld tuner retails now a days for around $300 as said above, and in addition to calibrating the speedo, you can turn off the rear o2's, adjust timing, spark advance, air/fuel at certain RPM ranges, read trouble codes, etc. It pretty much is up to you to decide whether you want to go that route, or if you plan to do a custom dyno tune down the road, just go with the speedcal for now, and when you get the tune, take the speed-cal out and sell it here.. somebody is almost always looking for one.

Make sure they stand behind thier work, then get them to install the gears and save the $500 and get a hand held and use the other $100-$150 left over for a good weekend of drinking.

thanks for the help, I think I might just go with the hand held tuner since I will be changing my rims and tires and throwing on some bolt ons that the tuner will come in handy for.

The labor price is a great price, the crap about $500 chips is crap just tell them no thanks. Then get a Predator or SCT handheld engine programmer

I bet the shop is making the install price look better by raising the price of the handheld tuner. The overall price is not outrageous (and it does vary from region to region), especially if the installer is meticulous about setting up the gears. Tell them that you can find a handheld for about $400 and see if they will adjust their price to meet it (bring in a print-out from a handheld tuner retailer for proof).

the install price is pretty good like everyone else said. but for less than $500 you could easily get an xcal2, a predator, or even a dyno tune at your local performance shop. or you could even spend $100 for a speedcal to correct your speedo.
