4.10s are definitely useable in a daily driving sense. At first, I was really concerned about traction in 1st gear and the general useability of 1st gear, but after pulling the trigger I realized there was nothing to worry about. Maintaining traction in 1st is no problem and 1st gear doesn't go by too quickly IMHO.

To strengthen my point, my beater car (1990 BMW 325xi) recently crapped out and I had the misfortune of driving my Mustang in the snow I thought my wheels would be spin city and I would ultimately end up in a snow bank in no time, but I was still able to pilot my Mustang through snow even with 4.10s and my fairly robust set of bolt-ons.

Albiet I did have to drive slowly and I am running a helluva snow tire, but the point is that I could still maintain traction even in adverse weather conditions.

However, if you are sensitive about running about 300 more rpm than usual, and are really concerned about gas mileage don't get the 4.10s. However, if those are your concerns you might as well stay with whatever your stock gear is. My $0.02

Look at what ford recommends for the drag pac- 4.10. I put 4.10s in my 07 & love them.
If you want fry tire you can or you can just pull out in traffic & be gone also.

Gas milage is not terrible. Once you get on the highway just set the cruise at 70-75 and you can still maintain over 20mpg.

I enjoy the gear for other reasons besides accel. You can be in 4th @ 40mph and not have to downshift if you wanted to speed up a little, and you can also pass in 5th at 70mph without downshifting into 4th.

I would love to know the answer to this also since I go to school about 300 miles away from home and I would like to be able to maintain a decent gas mileage number on that trip without having to sacrifice to much speed.

My gas mileage went down about 2mpg. I used to get 21.5 mpg on mixed city and highway driving, and going up and down hills. Now I get 19.5 mpg.

I ride a hair under 3k doing 80mph. But since I live in Miami I rarely see 80mph. Gas realy didnt change to bad at worst I lost a mile off my mpg. I say do it 4.10's all day all night baby.

I have the FRPP 4.10 gears and love them. My gas mileage always sucked with the 3.55's or the 4.10's. - just the way I drive. But then again I didn't buy this car because I was worried about gas mileage....it's all about performace for me.

GEARS

In answer to the last part of your original question, what to do to make them "not break". You might consider the rear end housing from Ford Racing with the girdle built in. Adds strength to the diff. assembly, plus gives you a drain plug.
