This has been bothering me lately... does anyone else notice the abundance of fat or too skinny people? I'm 23... except for one other kid that I did Tae Kwan Do with, I'm the only one of my friends that exercise regularly. Apparently the new thing is to be extremely skinny, wear too tight pants, and have long hair that goes over your eyes while wearing giant skate boarding sneakers. And have TERRIBLE POSTURE! News flash: not everyone can be sponsored by FOX Racing.

Or just be fat. I went boating this weekend in Brimfield MA with a bunch of guys and our gfs from college and I was the ONLY one that had a flat stomach. I'm not overly jacked, I'm 5'6 170 with about 12 percent body fat, depending on who's calipers I'm using. If you're a guy in your 20's there's no reason to be out of shape.

And ladies... its ok to do more at the gym then the elliptical. Lift some weights! Skinny does not equate to attractive in my book.

So why are people, especially younger guys/gals, rocking either guts or ribs that you can count? I'm thinking its several things, mostly that there aren't many jobs left that require physical labor and people are more apt to stay in and play video games / watch TV. I'm an engineer with a desk job and I still manage to workout 4-5 times a week.

So whats the deal?

well i do agree with most of what you have said. the too skinny, long haired skater guys, i dont really get them. and the too skinny girls i also am not attracted too. but as for the using a flat stomach as a guide thing, i dont agree with that. i am 20 years old, i am 6'3" and 210 pounds. i have been religiously going to the gym for the past 2 years, and can out lift most of my buddies and am faster than most in a sprint or mile time situation. but i still have this little beer gut and i look the most out of shape out of my buddies. i try hard to try and look the part, but no matter what i do, i cannot shake this beer gut i got goin on. i am sure that if i strict dieted for a long time, i could get that 6-pack, but while living this whole college life thing, that just aint goin to happen. i think the whole look thing is kind of overplayed. my one cousin is a cross country runner, and with his shirt off he can look pretty jacked, but couldnt bench press his own body weight to save his life. but i do understand where you are goin with this, because i have seen my fair share of just plain fat people with about zero muscle mass, and that i just dont get.

Adam, I have been all three of the people you have described. At 20yrs. old, I was 6' 4" 185lbs. No muscle tone and couldn't bench my own body weight. I didn't care for this look, so I hit the gym 5 days a week, 3 yrs. straight.

At 24 I was 240 and 5% body fat, while dieting for a competition( with a six pack:D ). I loved the look, but I spent my entire life at work or the gym. I would work out for 1-2 hrs, go to work for 10hrs, cardio after work for another hour, then go to bed and do it all over the next day. I decided to be fat, and have fun at this point.

At 29 (two mo. ago) I was 306lbs. I couldn't stand to look at myself in the mirror. Being fat and lazy was EASY... and fun at first. Hell, it's the American way! But fat is no way to be either, so I have started to get back in shape. (258lbs. as of last friday) As far as I can see, you are correct on the fact there are fewer physical type jobs out there, but I think it is mostly the fact Americans are getting lazier by the minute. There is no desire to "work out" or do a physically demanding job for anyone. (fat or skinny). That is my take on it.

P.S. I sold my video game system, and cancelled cable when I started to get back into shape to have less excuses.

Well when I was at school I had lots of energy and time to workout , even had almost flat stomach( I was in condition between skinny and fat). Since I started doing construction my stomach got bigger, energy is a lot lower and there is almost no time to spare. Wake up at ~ 4:30am leave house at ~5:20 and travel for about 50 min. work for at least 8 hrs. on my way back home hit traffic , come to house at 5:00pm tired. You see at this time working out is the last thing I want to do , is f@(king 90 degrees and humit. I know there is many legal supplements that will give me "kick" of energy and regeneration(used to take a creatine) but don't want to take 'em cause prefer natural stuff. Couple weeks ago I put away white bread, white rice and all that kind of food and eat a more protein. The results are my belly is getting smaller but I getting exhausted faster. Still trying to workout 3 times a week but not extremely like I used to. I'm 23 years old.

Yes. Lots of fat people and smoking. Some fatso's can't help it..others just eat too much and are lazy. Smoking..no excuse.

"At 20yrs. old, I was 6' 4" 185lbs. No muscle tone and couldn't bench my own body weight."

That's normal. You were just as strong as the little guys, maybe stronger..Bench press is hard for tall guys cuz they got further to push.

I'm 21 and between school and working almost full time I don't ahve much time to get to the gym, but I do try. I'm 5'10" and about 175, i can almost bench my weight, but I still ahve this little gut that I can't seem to shake as well. My whole thought has turned from trying to attain the chisled/ripped look and I figure as long as I'm not drowning in myself and I carry myself well its cool. I'm still embarassed to take off my shirt in front of some of my friends because they are all the ripped type and it does make you self conscious...

I see alot of fit people every day..........

at the gym.

I'm probably the healthiest I've been my whole life right now, I do strength training at the gym 3-4 times a week in the mornings before I go to work, and go running, cycling or play tennis after work a 4-5 times a week. I'm 6'2" 185lbs, and I'm shooting to be around 200-210lbs within the next couple of years.
But yeah, I must agree that most of my friends are either overweight and lazy, or skin and bones (lazy or not). A couple of them go to the gym almost every day only to do cardio. They never ever pick-up a weight to work any upper-body muscles. They'd be lucky to be able to pull their own weight to save themselves, let alone someone else, even at 110lbs (the girls) they can't even do two push-ups. As for the fat ones, well, lets not even go there.

But yeah, I don't understand how any woman could find a 26" waist on a guy who weighs less than she does at all sexy. Every time I see those couples I figure the dude is probably hung like a horse, since he's lacking all other manly features.

I'm currently working for General Motors and surrounded by fat guys all day. The lack of women in engineering doesn't help. No eye candy for me until I go to the gym. It's a bit disturbing how fat America is. You know there's a problem when people drive the motorized carts through grocery stores just because they're too damn lazy and fat to walk around.

and then there are all the fast foods and supersized meals.

i find going to the gym and pumping iron one of the most boring and un-invigorating activites around. i'd much rather play tennis, basketball, hockey, soccer, ice skate, or swim. anything but go to the gym

i used to ride my bike to work at georgetown university, and the university has a gym so i could go over and swim or play raquetball at lunch. it was perfect and i was in the best shape of my life. at 5'11", i weighed 180 lbs and wore size 32 pants.

then i was laid off and life changed

now i work 15 miles away and i don't have time to ride that distance. plus, bike friendly routes would add even more miles. i joined a gym but i have been there maybe 5 times in the last 2 years. gyms just don't do it for me. go figure why i gained 20 lbs and could barely fit into size 36 pants

i finally found a public pool close enough and that i can get to and swim during my lunch break. i have an hour and i can swim 1/2 mile in 15 minutes, which gives me 45 minutes to get there and back, change, shower, and get some food. it's tight, but it works and i have lost 10 pounds and 2 inches off my waist. i am now under 200 lbs and can fit into size 34 pants again. and that is something i look forward to doing, as opposed to going to a smelly gym and looking at sweaty guys busting their balls trying to lift weights that are too heavy for them.

the other days, i walk a mile to the subway and get a turkey sandwich with baked lays and walk back.

you have to do something that works for you. so far this is working for me...

This thread may have just given me some motivation again. I am about 5'11 180lb. From Nov to mid june i was lifting and running 3-4 days a week and on my way to getting pretty cut. But over the last month i have really been slacking. First it was 2 days a week. Then 1 then 1 and now i havent even gone yet this week and its already thurs!! I am gonna hit it hard tonight. I also have a pretty average body with a very slight gut. And all my friends are pretty cut and they never work out

its because the majority of people our age (im 23) :nonono: think that the only way to have a good time is too have a case of beer beside them! BEER = Fat! Im 6ft 185 lbs and around 13% body fat!

:nonono: Mmmhmmm. I like to have a couple now and then but have drastically cut down. I was drinking Bud which has 140 cals per beer. Switched to Miller Light which has 95... still too much.

When I do drink, its Jack Daniels on the rocks. There's 60 calories in a shot. Think about it. Say you have 30 beers a week. That's about 3000 calories extra in Miller Light, way more if you drink regular / microbrews. 3500 calories make a pound. So for the average dude downing a 6 pack after work, he's putting on at least a pound a week in beer fat. Gross. I had a rule in college, for every beer I drank I had to run 1/4 mile the next day. Doesn't sound like much but a 12 pack later you gotta bang out 3 miles, hung over.

If I have 30 shots worth of whiskey a week, thats 1800 calories. I don't drink nearly that much. But to lose weight is simple math, you have to create a caloric deficit. Your body burns roughly 11 x your body weight a day in calories just by your normal processes. So unless you're eating less than that in calories per day, you are going to gain weight. It's that simple.

i was pretty much the same as everyone else. slim in HS with little strength, ballooned after HS to like 260. hit the gym done to about 220 but with much more muscle. i was also workin a strenuous job at the time so i ingested serious calories but was burnin it off. after a year of that i was burnt out. body was jus too fatigued. so i stopped ALL excercise but kept eating, back to 260:nonono: within less than a year!!
-So now im gonna take it slower. my diet or lack there of is my main prob as i have no problems busting my butt in the gym daily.
-either way be happy with your self. when i gained the weight back i was still bulky, jus fat on top of muscle. but i looked on the bright side. id rather be big & strong than just be big:nice:
-Who out there counts their calories?? How much?

I do 2500 3000 calories a day. Eat 6 meals, 3 of which are protein shakes. I workout using programs by Joe Defranco and Louie Simmons. I recently switched from a 4 day lifting to 3 days, program looks like this:

mon - Heavy lifting upper body, sprints for 30 sec on, 90 sec off
tues - light jog, 3-4 miles, or swim some laps in the pool, lots of ab work
wed - heavy lifting lower body
thurs - same as tues
fri - body builder style upper body, IE lots of reps to failure, sprints for 30 sec on, 90 sec off

Weekends are off, but I'm always out, either in my canoe or hiking. I also do some occasional tree work as a side job on saturdays. I can finish all of my workouts in an hour or less. I literally never watch TV unless I'm at a sports bar. I get all the news at work on the internet. I consume more food on MWF then I do on TTr. Weekends I've been slacking and need to get more strict!

I used to be in great shape and I let myself go in college. In the past few months I've been hitting the trails near my house mountain biking again. I always felt like a jerk for letting myself get fat.

Now with the sedentary nature of my job, laziness feeds on itself. I've figured out ways to get around my laziness and lack of motivation. I try to eat well because of the immediate performance loss it causes in my riding. Then, on top of the bi-weekly trail rides, I do road rides twice a week to improve my trail riding. It's been working really well for me since I feel everything I do has a purpose: to get better at mountain biking. I'm hoping by this time next year, I can get into racing.

My problem with sticking with a program was the lack of motivation and quick results as anyone would know, but with getting into a sport, you CAN see immediate results in performance long before you see results in how you look. Find something thats FUN and do it, then make the goal to get really good at it. By the time you are really good at it, you have probably gotten into pretty good shape. Biking has turned into something I actually look forward to doing.

There ARE ways of dieting and excersizing that are satisfying without feeling like it's a ton of WORK. Some people are OK with being hardcore about what they eat and do, with strict dieting and such. In my opinion, that's going too far. For me, just thinking "if I eat this pizza, I'm going to hurl on the trail" is enough to keep me eating right. Granted, I do take protein after a workout and on days I don't workout, but because I know I need it and it reduces my recovery time between rides. Again it has a very noticeable purpose so it's satisfying to do.

My next big purchases will be a new bike and a weight machine for our spare bedroom :D

a couple people have told me that you dont need to lift EVERY day. and im sure thats what wears me out. ill probly try to switch to a 3 days of lifting. so i can go harder when i do it. maybe tues and weds i can do cardio only. no TV!!!!!! how do you get to see all those stangs on PINKS then?

Zero Signal - Take some Xtend or Purple Wrath, gives you a good endurance factor:nice: Xtend taste better. PW has got some good essential amino acids, Xtend is more basic chained amino acids...

Those products are also good for maintaining muscle mass while doing cardio...

Weight lift and then run right afterwards, but typically I would try to keep it under 20-25 minutes of cardio or else you risk burning up muscle...

94v6gt - Yeah, you got it, give your body a couple days to rest...let them muscles grow. They don't grow in the gym, they grow out of the gym (sleeping):)

AMERICA IS LAZY!! Right after I turned 21 I gained like 15 pounds..... I have always been self conscious and it bothered me every day.. As for not having time.... I have been working 7/12's with a commute for a couple of months.. I leave at 5:45 and get home at 7:00.. I still have more energy if i go to the gym after that long of a day, then when I don't...I started training hard in December at 6'0 217... 23 % BF... I am now 196 17% BF and dropping... I LOVE to work out... It makes me feel sooo good.. I was at first eating ALOT and trying to gain muscle and strength.. Now I am eating very very little, generally just protein shakes and chicken and do alot more cardio.. My goals are to be 8% BF and around 175.. Then I will work on getting a little bigger in my weaker areas...

Also, I spend more of my time preparing meals and trying to eat healthy than I do working out.. Eating truly healthy takes ALOT of time... There are very few foods that can be purchased at the grocery store that are instantly preparable and low fat, calorie, and carb... Oh, and NO EXPLODE FTW... That stuff is truly amazing for getting an incredible pump...
