Getting a 4.6

I'm getting a 2000 4.6 mustang and i'm very excited, but I just had a few questions about the car. Are there any maintainance concerns I should take care of immediately (70K miles) other than the typicals? Should I replace the clutch on the car? and how easy is it to install a stereo in it?

it should have the Mach 460 stereo and thats plenty (to me anyway). you wouldnt have to replace the clutch.

Um, first of all, if you're buying a car, why don't you have someone knowledgable with you checking it first? Always do a compression test, and a few other tests, drive it cold, see how it shifts, listen to the rear, strain the alternator, etc etc.

But to be honest, even a badly beaten stang at 70k is hardly broken in IMO.
Listen to the motor, lifter noise is normal on all modular engines, but listen for taps, heavy sounding taps, however I suggest you have a mechanic or someone expert to check the car, I've never bought a car without driving the hell out of it, checking the oil, smelling the tranny fluid to make sure it isn't burnt(burnt means tranny is screwed/automatic only).

But to answer your questions, the clutch should be fine, I've gotten 170k on a clutch before. It depends how it's driven, a clutch can last a very long time. Usually the TOB go's before the clutch, unless you suck at driving.

Also, they're very easy to put a stereo in, however, if it has the Mach system, I suggest keeping the stock system, and have a pro install amps/subs if you like. Unless you want a really flashly 6 disc in dash player, btw there's lots of room to customize audio in a stang if you're willing to get ride of other stuff there. You can have a very nice head unit, and also a nice a$s EQ also.

Anyways, I think you should get someone to check out the car before you buy it, to be honest, just by the way you sound, I would have no choice but to assume you don't really know what to look for as far as a beat, no good car, you're asking the wrong questions, and neglecting many questions that need to be answered before buying "any" car.

Good luck. If you must, pay someone to check the car. If they wont let you take it to a shop to have it tested, by appointment and all professionally, then don't trust them, there's something wrong with the car.

Thanks for the quick reply guys and yes, I'm going to have my friend's dad (who owns a garage and is very very good with cars) look at the car before i decide to buy it. I know a decent amount about cars, but as far as actually working on them, I'm still a bit green. I'm going to do most of the work on the stang though so hopefully I'll learn something

Clutch should be good, im at 102k on mine.

If you buy it, go through and change all the fluids and whatnot. Oil change, coolant flush if it hasnt just been done, change the trans fluid, fuel filter, do the PCV valve, spark plugs... BE CAREFUL changing the plugs on these cars, it can turn into a nightmare if not done correct.

All of that you can do youself except maybe the coolant flush... you can buy a kit to do it yourself if you feel comfortable doing that.

LS1 styling is terrible (except the ws6 ram air) and cobra's are in another financial ballpark (the new edge ones).

As the others said, clutch shouldn't be a problem at 70k.

I personally think the mach 460 sounds awesome. I added a head unit and some subs and i couldn't be happier with the sound.

I don't like the styling of the LS1 cars although they're really fast, and I DEFINATELY can't afford a cobra...although I would LOVE an 03 because they're insane

I'm not too much of a stereo guy myself. The stock Mach 460 was good enough for me, but i have the 6disk version, which i think is slightly upgraded overall over the 94-00 version
