Getting Gears...what else?

Well i'll be doing a gear install myself within the next few weeks. I'm getting 3:73's (used). What else will i need for the install? I'm going to rebuild my Trac-Loc so i know i'll need that kit, should i do anything else while i'm in there? Also, wheres a good write-up on how to install, and tricks/tips to do a good job? Theres no doubt that me and my father can do it, just might take a little while

I post the link on Corral for info....I did mine with that and a copy of 5.0 mag as they have write-ups to..

I would line up a truck repair shop or the like to pull/replace the bearing if you don't have access to a press....
Be prepared for the rear ABS sensors...your either gonna get em or break em, its a 50/50 on them..
Dont forget to match-mark the DS to the yoke when you remove...just for what its worth..
Save 2 of your best clutches and do the 4 clutch pack set-up...its a tad beefier...
Use a radiator clamp to squish the S spring some for installation...get it 1/2 way in, cut the clamp and finish setting it....will save you a TON of grief getting the mother in...otherwise you can fight it bigtime...

I didn't find it all that bad...take your time and you'll be all set...its fairly straight forward...

You might want replace all your bearings while you have it apart too. You can get a complete bearing kit for about $100 from Summit.

GET NEW BEARINGS...

I didn;t and mine goes back in the shop wed for me to pay an extra few $$ to ahve them all replaced...

All this stuff sounds expensive. I totaled up what it will cost, and it is a lot.

$320 Install Price at a performance shop...

350 for parts, plus the install...

$670.00 That's a grip.

Is this what a gear swap costs...

(I know it can be lower, $320 is the highest I was quoted, for gears only, not the Trac, Bearings, or Speedo)

Well you can get the rebuild kits cheaper on ebay, used gears...i'll be doing it cheap, and i'll be doing it myself so NO labor costs.

I have been loking at this also, but thought that it involved alot more like indexing and use of shims. Is that involved or could it be skipped and not have any problems. I have all the parts for the install, including the rebuild kit, but never tried in fear that I wouldn't get the shims right.

Ok guys, I found a local mustang guy who said he'd do it for $150. He's installed them before, and garenteed NO WHINE. He's also going to sell me used 3:73's for $75, and he said would go in fine, and havent been worn. So heres the list of stuff:

Install - $150
Gears - $75
Install Kit (bearing and all) - $80.00
Trac Loc Rebuild - $50

Thats $355 not including gear oil, and friction modifier. What gear oil should i get, and is there anything else i need to give this guy? I need to provide him with all the parts. Is this it?

Does the full bearing kit come with axle and pinion seals??? If not then they should be on your list...all 3 are cheap money and should be swapped while its open...
I just use Ford lube in mine...
With 373s I'm running the White 21 tooth...It doesn't appear to be all that far off...I had the White with my 355s and left it in with these...Someday I'll score a Speedcal in the classifieds and swap it in..

stprorolla49...I didn't swap bearings...mine had 52k and all was fine so I re-used them...prolly took me an a/noon the first time to do em...I got hung up with having to go get the pinion swapped....

mine will probably need new bearings, and i'm pretty sure that kit comes with everything. I might not worry about a speedo gear right now, i heard 23 tooth was good with 3:73's. How hard are they to change, i might just wait and do that after.

Unplug the connector on the tranny...remove the bolt...pull the VSS...undo a Circ-clip and remove the old gear...10 minute job...
