My poor car has been in the shop for 1.5 years for a paint job. The roof has plagued the painter. For some reason he can't get the paint to stay down and says it needs a new roof. My car factory had a vinyl roof, and it got pretty rusted over the years, and looked pretty bad when I gave it to him. He thought he could clean it up, and paint it for me. Apparently he was wrong. The rest of the car's paint is all done, but the roof is screwed back at square one. As far as I know I've never seen new skins for the roof. Anyone have any suggestions for me ? Where to get a junk car w/ good roof etc....

I've never heard of a new roof skins either, i've only heard of completely replacing it, which might be what you end up having to do. Is it rusting bad or has the rust be contained? Do you absolutely not want to go with vinly? and sorry, off topic, what rims are those?

I just an ad for 67-68 Fastback roof skins in one of my mags, not sure of coupes yet! Just put a new vinyl top on it.

Yeah, because he's either not prepping it well enough or is using some funky paint, filler, primer, etc. I've never heard of sheetmetal having any mysterious paint-repelling properties. Even acid etching the corrosion out would probably be easier than replacing the whole lid.

Like it really should have taken Maaco four weeks to shoot my previous car a solid white .

Sound's like it's not prepped right ,putting a vinyl top back on is probably not what you want to hear,but it's alot easier than replacing the roof skin ,you could check with Dynacorn.com , they are the company reproducing the fastback '68, their product's are real quality, I just installed full quater panel's they just released on my '68 GTO ,this had to be a hard part to reproduce,and they are real quality.

I'm cutting the roof off my coupe for a fastback conversion this winter. If you want it you can have it for nothing. Only problem is I'm in Western Kentucky. You'll have to come and get it.

Could I turn my car into a fastback with the new roof skins ? What all is involved in that

No way it's getting a vinyl roof again. Besides if it continues to rust sooner or later I'll have nothing but vinyl over my head.

the painter is using this filler stuff called "All Metal" on the roof - the rest of the car looks great

Sorry to hear about your luck, I remember way back when you were all pumped to send it off to paint. I would do it the right way and get another roof cut! Hope things work out for ya sorry I'm not much more help!

Get a repo FB roof skin and two FB quarters and a trunk lid is most of it.....but not all. It has been shown on here before...

anyone else have roof skins, or a 67-68 parts car for cheap ? I've looked all over so I'm giving this a shot too. I just want my car back, but I'm gonna have to have a new roof skin first I've gotta do something. It's going on a 2 year paint job now b/c I've slacked on finding a roof.

Get a new body man.

Do you know how many thousands it wil cost to replace a roof properly?

And with all this talk of converting it to a fastback at this stage of the game? Well, you might as well send your car to crusher and take your 19 cents per pound and put it towards a fastback. It will be cheaper in the end (unless your body man can't get paint to stick to it either because a seagull pooped on it).

Don't lose focus on what the problem is - painting the roof. You do not to keep the layer of paint and replace car underneath it.

yeah I probably need to pick the car up, and go elsewhere, or at least get a second opinion huh ?

I know he has painted my roof 3 times and has the same result. Being that after he tried to bake the paint it bubbles up all over. He says the rust has gone through, and is rusting from the bottom of the roof skin, and that is where it emits the gasses that bubbles the paint up. I dunno. I wish I knew more about this. Should I prep the under side of the roof too ?

I didn't think once I actually found a roof skin replacing it would be that difficult.

Replacing the roof is not going to be cheap. At least a couple grand (including the new headliner, reinstalling the glass, etc.)

Making it into a fastback will cost probably 3 times as much as replacing a coupe roof. Besides the exterior body parts (including quarters) you also need all the interior parts (everything behind the front seats is different). Plus I don’t know where you would find a fastback to part out.

I have seen paint stick to bondo, fiberglass, rust, galvanized metal, aluminum, primer – you name it. Your body man is either (1) tired of your car and wants you to go away, or (2) a complete idiot, or (3) trying to get some more money out of you.

Find a different shop.

I looked at a coupe this past summer, it had had a vinyl roof on it as well. Looked pretty bad from above, but when I looked from the inside, it was like looking up into the night sky with no moon waaayyyy out in the country with no city light polution.

I say replace the roof with coupe roof. Most of the ones I've seen were bad out in the middle of the roof, not on the edges. If your is this way, a compotent body man should be able to cut the middle of the old one out, leaving 1/4"-3/8" lip around the edge, and cut the doner to the edge, then just stitch the donor onto the car, likely without removing the glass, but it needs to be covered up as welding sparks are hot enough to leave pits in the glass. He just needs to spray the overlapping edges with weld thru primer and seam seal the inside once it's done.

Or, maybe it's time to invest in an English wheel?

I hacked the roof off of my 70 coupe in the garage and it's come together pretty well, I was able to get the Junk yard to cut the good roof off and deliver it for 450 bucks, here's some links to a few pics and a write up I did over at http://www.ghettonet.org

I did it myself with a saws all and a grinder and a bit of welding, take your time and measure and re measure.

there is a 67 fastback in the junkyard near my house! fir ur problem strip the roof and buy por 15 this stuff is awesome i used it on my brothers 69 cougar u can brush it on or spray it on . if the paint is not sticking it is improper prep procedures either wax/grease or rusting under the paint take the roof down to the metal use the por 15 degreaser then there acid etcher and then the por15 primer over it with there high build primer block and spay to match ur car the por 15 filled in sanding scratches and rust pits after sand blasting u will be glad u did
