now i am certainly no expert on this subject..........but why is he baking the paint????

Is it bubbling everywhere? I did a roof skin once - we didn't cut the whole roof off, just used a cut-off wheel and went around the edges and re-skinned it. It took like two days, pretty easy, really. If you have to cut the whole roof off, that's a different story. I wouldn't want to do it.

Are there actual holes through the roof? How far was the roof stripped before your guy started to work on it? It sounds to me like he is talking about moisture/chemical contamination not rust. Baking of paint is done at relatively low temperatures that will not directly cause steel to oxidize. If there are holes and a replacement roof skin is out of the question then completely strip the roof to good clean bare metal. Neutralize the rust as much as possible. Paint the roof with a good self etching primer. Fiberglass the inside and outside, smooth and paint. No matter what you end up doing I would have somebody else do it, Not the guy that is working on it now.

Some finishes can be dried faster if they are run through an oven after application. Many collision repair shiops will do this because depending on the weather the amount of drying time can mean the difference between a 1/2 day paint job and a two day paint job. It is often done with IR or Halogen light heaters.

thanks for the reply, i'll hopefully be getting my car painted next winter after i save up the $$$$....... so i gots lots of time to learn about painting

BUT

OK, it can help it dry faster, but we are not talking a collison repair here, the guy has had the car for a couple years..........and has baked the roof 3 times..........i still just don't get it

i've seen pretty decent paint jobs done in barns and they told me that the base coat dries almost instantly and the only thing that they ever were worried about time wise was with the clear coat getting dust in it while curing.......

I am not justifying his body guys actions. I was just answering your question.

most really good paint jobs will be baked especially if you use an enamel paint, but base/clears also benefit from baking. my car was baked after it was painted and all of our cars were baked from the factory too.
