Good Rebuild Kit?

Hey guys,

Well apparently I have a slight rod knock, and I'm starting to realize that while I have my transmission out, it may not be too mad idea to rebuild my motor. Unless someone say's otherwise, I'm not going to machine the block at all, and go with standard sizes. I am contemplating this kit here . Is this a wise choice?

As far as the heads go, I figure my budget is around 1000 for all the engine work. If I spend 150 on roller rockers, and then another 150 on the necessary hardware, I'm already at 820. I still need valves and springs, not to mention any machine work.

The reason I'm doing all this is I basically need to rebuild my transmission. Having the transmission out is a good excuse to pull the motor. The motor has been missing regularly now, with no luck of getting the miss gone. It hesitates at high rpm, and is running hot. With this added problem of a slight knock, I feel it would be good to rebuild.

Any suggestions on what to get done specifically and how much it'll run?

Machining depends on mileage, how hard you are on it, and matienece. IF it does need machine work you might be better off buying a short block. There are tons of companys selling them, among the best (not cheapest) are Coast High Performance and DSS racing. You could allso order one from ford.

LOL should have looked at you link first, its a cleveland so scratch the short block. My cleveland had only 7thou of taper after 100,000 miles on it and almost didnt need a rebuild. Tha kit looks good, but you have to factor in head work too. Ive put about $4500 into my cleveland so far and not quite done( but it should be a 400-450 hp) your going to need machine work, they have to balence the rotating assmbly turn crank, resize rods then maybe they might have to bore it. Call up a local shop and run some numbers. your rebuild shouldnt cost too much just take a while.

Any estimates on how much? I'm sorry, I just want to get a rough estimate before I decide to yank the thing.

I'm not looking for a huge amount of HP, 300-350 would be nice. Your cost of 4500 does scare me though. I really cannot afford anything over 1200 or so. Looks like I may be in over my head now.

If you have a knock, there is a very good chance you will need machine work.

Dont be scared by the $4500 ( and still about $2000 more to go), this is no basic rebuild by any means. I went to the best machine shop in town and prety much did everything to this engine. So it will be a good 400 hp very streetable engine. I think balencing for me was 160, rod resizeing and shot peening was like 80 i think, bore and hone around like another 160. You could proble rebuild the short block for 1200 if you get a good deal with machine work. But dont forget to have your heads redone if they need it. That cam will need beefier valve springs and so on. Probly run you a few hundred if your on a budget. so you should be able to do it under 2000 im shure. Good luck!
