I just bought a used running motor with 84k miles from a specialty salvage place. I'm coming up with a list of things to do to freshen it up before installing it. I want to start with every gasket, including (especially) the oil pan and timing cover. I may steam clean it and paint the long block. I'll give it a new front and rear main seal and thrust bearing. Maybe a new throwout bearing for the clutch and get the flywheel turned. Anything else I could do that doesn't require big money and machine work??

Also, I wanted to flush the tranny while it's out. Are there any DIY transmission flush kits for manual transmissions?

The clutch has been out for 4 years and may have some grime on it. Is there something I could do to clean it or just use compressed air to dust it off and leave it alone?

What about the power steering rack and other things still in the engine bay? I wonder if there is something I should take car of NOW that I have the chance? I might paint it at least.

Instead of steam cleaning it use a wirewheel on a big buffer. It works wonders for taking off paint/crap on the block. Also make sure you paint it so it looks decent.

While you have it out you might as well inspect all the bearings for abnormal wear and replace whatever is necessary. I doubt the flywheel will need to be turned at that mileage but it won't hurt.
