How do I find out if my fuel pump is mechanical or electrical? Also, is it in-line or in tank?

It's an 89 mustang lx 5.0. I'm assuming it may not be stock, what the best way to check these two things?

Get under the rear of the car, and look to see if there is a wiring harness up at the top rear of the fuel tank. Unplug the connector there and see if the car starts...

But,... when you get in the car, turn EVRYTHING [radio, heater, etc etc] off and simply turn the key ahead all the way but do not turn it over to start... If you listen you should hwear a "bzzzzzzzzzzzt" for a second or two coming from the rear of the car. Thats the fuel pump priming up the fuel rail/injectors.

Inline pump, just follow the fuel lines from the fuel tank to the front of the car. The only thing you should find along the way is the fuel filter which is mounted up against the underside of the trunk floor...

Do you have the original EFI fuel injection with stock type injectors in the intake ? If so it's probably the original style in-the-tank fuel pump.
