This is too cool for words if it works, and apparently from all the initial posts I have seen on it, it does:

iPhone Apps We Like: Dynolicious Car Performance Meter

I'm away from home and don't have access to the mustang, but I'm going to try this out immediately. Bummer that it's $12.99, but that beats $200+ for a similar piece of hardware to do this. They should win an award for the most innovative use of the accelerometer on the iPhone.

You don't need a 3G iPhone, the original works just fine, you just need the 2.0 software update. I can't really trust my speedo accuracy, so this is a great little application to get me my 0-60 as well as my 1/4 mile and regular street cornering Gs.

Heh, I tested it out today finally - found a nice spot of flat, open road and let 'er rip. The results were pretty underwhelming, but accurate and seemed accurate for my car. I put in the following:

-3300 lb. vehicle weight, 3100 + me + soundproofing material which I figure is about 30 lbs. or so.
-Drivetrain loss of 18%, guesstimated for a TKO600 and a stick axle rear from what I've read around the web

Results: (best run)

0-10 1.13
0-20 2.24
0-30 3.32
0-40 5.19
0-50 7.39
0-60 9.9
0-70 13.61

max acceleration .79gs
Peak Horsepower 135hp. This is kind of what I would expect for a 100k mile 302-2v that started with 210hp at the crank and is bone stock. 18% drivetrain loss gives me a crank HP of 159, or about 25% loss in power over the years. It seems like the app pretty much does what it says. My runs were pretty consistent, and shifting sooner before I ran out of power did yield me my fastest run. Seems like it's well worth the $13 if you've already got the iPhone . . .
