Got boned by the dealer today

Jumped in my car this morning and it wouldn't idle. Didn't have time to fix it and the only garage that would take it this morning was the dealer. Replace the iac. $100 for the iac (bend over) and $200 for labor (grabbed my ankles). wow!

The only bright spot was they loaded a new version of software.

200 for labor? you do realize it's 2 screws and 1 snap on electrical connector right? it's not even under anything! i swapped mine out in under 10 minutes in a parking lot. you should demand your 200$ back and tell them the difference in the outragous part price can be their labor!

You would have paid around $95 for the part from the Ford Parts counter and it is super easy to install...

Next time you have a problem with your car, ask SN before you do anything

Its good that you got the new software version though.

Ouch they tore that ass up. That is like the easiest part to replace, belive me I have to do it on a regular basis! Yeah next time save the butt raping and check stangnet first.

when i worked at a dealer they would charge 1 hour total for diag and install on things like those.

They call them Stealerships for a reason.

I got hosed on my other vehicle. Close to 400 bucks to do a power steering pump. The pump was 100 something bucks I think, the rest labor. I have since removed the pump myself a few times... I was pretty pissed, but that was a while ago before I was into working on cars.

shops have to charge a very high labor rate to cover the costs of screw-up's, discounts on some things, loaner cars, support staff ( writers,dispatcher,management, cashier. etc.) plus the high costs of special tools.

who do you think pays for the 11,000 dollar IDS the dealer has to buy, some dealers have 2 of these plus 3-4 2,000 NGS units.. plus the cost of special tools, many many thousands of dollars there. with special tools getting lost these have to be replaced so there is more cost.

screw-up's by techs is another BIG expense to the dealer or any shop, techs are not perfect we hav eto figure out problems in a timely manner so we can't spend all day trying to find out why your car is stalling once in awile, we need to diag it quick in under 1 hour, so a lot of times educated guesses are made.. and when those are wrong who do you think pays for the loaner car and eats the costs of this new repair.. yep the shop thats who.

Plus decent techs don't work for 10 bucks a hour. we have to spend 20-60k or more on tools, hell many of us own tool boxes that cost more than 10,000 and thats with no tools in it. it's a hard job with lots of risks if you make a mistake so many of us want atleast 20 per flat rate hour, with the best making 35 per flat rate hour.

Shops make a lot of money, but it's not as much profit as you guys think there is.

our shop charges 1.5 hours automatically on any cash tickets that involve hooking up the scan tools....

oh well....with ford cutting warranty time, techs gotta make a living too....do you spend 5-6K every year on your job?

Don't you and the dealerships write these things off? Well I know the dealership is but are you? Tools and all other work related supplies/expenses are tax write offs...I sure hope your not just eating these costs all these years.
Oh and if a shop losses money on a job, guess what? thats a write off too! Don't kid yourself if you don't think they aren't making good money in all phases of operation. There will always be money coming in on the backend that the employees and customers don't think of.

My dealership doesn't just write it off. Some times they will reverse the tech if it is bad enough and pay the tech that fixed it if it went to another tech. Alot of the times the tech will redo the job, but that is also money lost because now I have a tech tied up with a job he jacked up and we are losing money as i can't take in an extra r/o.

Techs spend tons and tons of money on tools to do their job, let alone the diagnositc tools updates each year. Easily 20k invested into doing their job.

its funny when you put in aftermarket electrical parts instead of OEM parts. when the outside shops cant fix it, we ram it again for all OEM parts, and the problems go away! whos to say the outside shop botched the job. especially with crap parts. oh well, guess its what you get for going to an outside shop with cheap parts. hahahaha.

20K probably just to get you started in the industry. about 5-6K to maintain. not enough to write off the 10K a year for tools, so basically we eat the tool bill. guess i have to write off my new dell pc and 37" monitor for work since ford motor company is now online interactive.
