Well, I finally pulled the trigger. The ring I ended up buying was:

1.15 Carats, Color E, VVS2, Excellent Pollish, Very Good Cut and Symmetry. It was far from the biggest diamond in my price range but I liked the colorless aspect. Definitely glad I listened to some of the advice on :SNSign: here about going smaller with higher quality.

I set it in a simple Platinum Tiffany's Style 6 prong setting. I bought it at Barmakian's in Framingham, MA, which I recommend to anyone because its the only place I went to in person that didn't make me feel like I was buying a used car. They also gave me a coupon for 10 percent off of weddings bands and 30 percent of any watch in the store.

I hollowed out a softball and put the ring box in the middle. So when I was playing catch with my girlfriend (she was an Olympic softball hopefull at one point) I put down the regular softball and threw her the ring. Then I ran over, got down on one knee, did the whole classic thing in the middle of a softball field. She loved it, which was great, because I was pretty damn nervous!

So the next step is to get pre-approved for a house and as soon as that happens, I am getting back into the mustang game!

Jesus christ, I'm sitting here racking my head over how I will afford .5 and .6c diamonds! Anyway, congrats dude! On the setting, I was looking at the same Tiffany one, it's about the best I've found that makes the rock look better. So many of the settings close off the bottom or sides too much and make the whole thing look dark to the eye.

Congratulations! I am just curious how old are you? It seems all my friends around me are getting engaged and they just seem way to young... dunno.

lol yeah a few of my friends did it this year (2) and my girls brother is popping the question to his girl within the next year...

sorry fellas, my engagement ring money has been spent on the motor and other stuff :D

Thanks to everyone!

I'm 25, my fiance is 24, and we have been dating for 2.5 years. We have been living together for a year though. I understand its not traditional, but I highly recommend it. After coexisting happily with her for more then a year, financially independent, I knew it was the real deal. Her parents were happy with it, and actually encouraged it after the first year we dated.

I have been saving for this ring for 15 months. Before we even moved in together. It was a slow and painful process, but if you stick with it, you can surprise yourself. This is things like all your tax returns, any bonuses you get at work, paying only the minimums on loans you owe, cutting WAY down on alcohol and going out to eat, picking up side jobs on the weekend, etc etc etc. Tighten the belt and you'll get there faster then you think!

In terms of size, its all subjective. To be honest I could have swung a 2 carat stone but when I put the 1.15 next to the 2, the difference was clear. Some women like the size, some women want more quality. I thought mine would be in the second category and I was right. I'm sure you could find a .5 Carat stone that costs more then my 1.15 carat. And don't forget to BARGAIN!! I was at the store for slightly over 2 hours haggling.

Congrats man!! :nice:

I've been with my fiance for like 6yrs, we've been engaged for 4... lived together about the same ammount of time..

Bought her a 1.5ct diamond, D color, princess cut -- i dont remember the other spec's on it (have the little cert at home some where).. I cheated and went to a family friend thats a jeweler... got a good deal (from what I saw online with the same ratings) -- very happy with the purchase :nice:

We've finally gotten our debt down to a point where we can afford to pay for her "dream wedding" so we're planning it for next november (so roughly 5yrs after we got engaged... we'll be married.. lmao)

I'm happy with the long engagement myself, we've been through alot of **** over the years, and I dont think we would still be together if we were married... Can't take the other one for granted when they can leave at any moment, w/o any BS..

I will say asking her to marry me was the best decision of my life though
