Grant wood wheel install?

My original steering wheel is long gone, so I figured I'd use the ubiquitus grant wood classic. Everything went fine up to the horn button.

The instructions say to push the horn button onto the fiber board piece by lining up the dimples. My dimples don't line up (3 holes, 4 posts?), and the fiber board is larger than the horn button by enough that it's not going in there any time soon.

Am I missing something obvious here? I'm using install kit 3249 and the 15" wood classic wheel.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Grant.
Once you get it on and completely destroy the fiber panel...you can use a little blue RTV to hold it all together.

This is the 3249 kit, you have something packaged wrong.

It looks basically the same as that, except it has an extra disk that goes on before the fiber disk. How does the horn work in that version?

I'm wondering if I should just start dremeling the fiber disk.

If you go to the Grant website and look up the classic wood wheel, the notes state that you have to use velcro to make it stay on. I had the same problem so instead I sold it and I am now switching to a MOMO wood, much better. Just need to get the pony center horn button.

I have seen very, very, very few (do you get the idea?)Grant steering wheels with a functioning horn. My signature series Grant functioned initially, but only for a few months. I'm with 4musclemachines. I just need to buy a higher quality steering wheel than Grant is apparently capable of offering. The finish on my polished aluminum center was crap from the day I received it.

Same problem here!

I got fed up with my install kit too. I kept the steering wheel. But I decided to re- route the horn wires and hook them up to a toggle switch on the dash. Didn't the Shelby's have some kind of a similar set-up? I think that is where I got the idea from. I think I still have the install kit in a parts box in the garage doing no good.

I have the grant 791 wheel and went with a billet horn cap and was very easy to hook up. It looks good and works well.

Mine works fine. I had to customise the contact PCB a little as I was getting some unwanted contacting after a lot of use. Can't complain though.

That same grant steering wheel I bought 3 years ago looks like that same crap you have there. Sad they couldn't re-design their stuff to work without being so cheaply designed.

Nice idea with the toggle switch, do you have Photo's of that? How'd you get the center part to stay connected? I think we'd be better off going with that toggle switch idea rather than burning out your turn signal switch... man I hated that part.

I did the toggle switch quite a few years ago, short of tearing it all apart I don't remember all the details. I do remember that it wasn't all that hard. Just have to identify your horn wiring, and reroute it down to the dash. Then affix your toggle switch under the dash and wire it. You will have to pull it down the sleeve in the steering column. I do remember that there was some unwanted shorting etc before I did this. Thats why I felt much safer going with the toggle switch. Sorry no photos.

It's cool, your description is perfect enough for a mental image. I think I've gone through 3 turn signal switches, you woulda figured I'd change the steering wheel by now, but I love that design look and haven't had the money for the deluxe woodgrain wheel. I think I'm going to do that toggleswitch ASAP.
