Grinding noise when i quickly decelerate and turn.

OK, today i was driving to walgreens to get some note cards and on the way home i was cruising and i decelerated kinda quick... nothing extreme, and i turned kinda sharp into my driveway and i heard a loud noise that might have been something grinding or vibrating real hard. Also, i havn't driven the car in a couple weeks cuz i don't have car insurance for a while. Do you think that was my tire rubbing on the turn?? is that semi-common??

At first i thought it was my sway bar vibrating, because idk if you guys remember i had a problem with it a while ago but i welded it and now its in ship shop shape, so i checked and it wasn't the rear sway bar... so... i'm guessing it was the tire... what do you guys think?

what size tires you run and was it a metalic grinding or rubber or plastic sounding grind? i would think it was either tires rubbing or brake pads worn metal to metal check rotor inside and out for rough groves and ensure brake pads have a good amount of pad left inside, and out also pull tire left and right and push up and down on tire on both sides feeling for any play to rule out tie rods and ball joints. post results. also alot of times if tire rubs you will see signs of rubbing inside wheel well and on tires look close for fresh rubs and abrasions on tire and wheel well.

Along with what Bill mentioned, I would check the front and rear bearings...Noise that comes when turning, then goes away when straight can indicate a faulty hub bearing...I had the front hub bearing go...only got the feel/sound.vibration on turning the wheel..

On the rear axle bearings, jack the tire off the ground some and do as Bill mentioned, the up/down and left/right and see if you have play.. a sign of a bad axle bearing...A peek at the back of the wheel and an oil stain is a good sign of the seal leaking and possible dif fluid being lost causing the bearing to take a dump from being dry....

Good luck with it....Hopefully something easy...

well i just got my breaks done a couple months ago, so i'll rule out any break pad related problems. As far as my tire size... i'm not sure they are nitto nt555's.

I checked all around the wheel well and i couldn't see any signs of rubbing anywhere although i heard the noise 2 days ago so evidence could be worn away by now.

I'm not sure wether it was a metallica or rubberish grinding noise... it sounded really similar to when my sway bar was broken, so it was almost like a hard raddle maybe? IDK its hard to remember a sound from a couple days ago.

Do you mean jack it up and literally push/pull on the tire itself? I'm not sure i know what to feel for? Your saying if it does have play than it could be a tie rod or ball join problem?

i don't know alot about steering in general so this is probably a dumb question but, what would the tie rod be rubbing on? The only education i have in the topic at hand is howstuffworks.com's explination of rack-and-pinion steering

What your looking for is play or slop, as I call it.. Get the tire a few inches in the air...grab it at 3 and 9 and tug side to side...If there's and play you should feel it....the steering connections have joints, look for any type of lifting motion when you move the wheel....sometimes balljoints will kinda lift apart when bad....sometimes you never notice it til somethings at the limit of travel...like the wheel cranked all the way...
drive it and do some quick turns of the wheel and see if it repeats the noise..

Grab a bar or something fairly beefy...slide that 6" or so under the tire (for leverage) and lift it...once again your feeling for play, any clicking, that kinda stuff..If somethings there you'll feeling it....
Same deal on the back....Having someone watch while your doing it would be a help since your new at it...it can be tricky to pick up on chit like this...

Have you been able to repeat the noise yet or was it a one time deal ??

Maybe your lucky and it was all in your head.....

don't jack it up just push and pull left and right hands at 9 and 3 o'clock and up and down hands at 12 and 6 o'clock your feeling for abnormal play where tire moves more than say 1/4 in. (ensuring steering wheel is locked and not turning)meaning the balljoint or tie rod end ball is worn within the socket which can cause abnormal noises while steering or driving. the noise won't come from rubbing it would be from play within ball and socket. if you do this test and think you have more play than you should check with a reputable front end shop they should do this test free and explain proceedure and results or next time you have a front end alignment ask them to show you this proceedure to check ball joints and tie rod ends.

OK ok ok, i pulled around on the tires like crazy and they seem prettttty dang snug.. so i figured i'd take her out for a test drive and do a couple hard core stops and turns. When i turn sharp left or right it doesn't make a sound, unless i accompany that turn with a quick deceleration.... which got me thinking its probably a break problem.

So i quickly put her up to about 50 mph and then quickly breaked down to about 30 mph, and not only did it make that raddling noise but the raddling noise was drowned out by a high piched "ping" noise as if someone took out a little symbol and hit it. and even after i stoped breaking i could still hear the sound keep ringing until it faded out like a high note on a guitar or something.

So... that sounds like that noise could easily result from old run down break pads... but mine are fairly new

any ideas?

check and ensure the upper and lower caliper mounting bolts are tight, you will need a large torx bit. they have kits that contain T-40, T-45, & T-50 torx bits i think ford uses a t-50.

ahhh, so maybe the calipers are sticking... ok. Although, i got new calipers when i got new breaks but i guess they still could be loose. I'll check that out tonight.
