Why not get a Performer?

Yeah willy, you aught to get either a Cobra or Performer (cheaper than the gt40) and the Performer flows better as well and still gives you that torque you like

it sucks (I know) to be on the receiving end

Aside from something other than what you listed, the GT40 flows better than a Cobra, even though the Cobra is basically a cast version of it. That said, you can probably port the Cobra more than you could the GT40, and after the porting you'd probably spend about as much if not a tad less than you would on a GT40.

Either one. They vary more by casting differences than anything else. I've got a flow bench comparison where a GT40 flows 206cfm and an Explorer flows 209cfm.

willys1 - I'm fairly sure the Performer does...with a bit better flow up top. The Performer will make you ever so faster (barely).

They just had a test a few months back in one of the mag's on intakes!! The GT-40 flowed the best down low and second best up top!! It lost to the new BBK!! The performer was menza.menza!!

Almost every test i can remeber reading in 5.0 or MMFF the GT-40 out performed the performer intake. while it is true that you are unable to port the GT-40 upper and it costs more, it is still the coolest looking intake for the 5.0 if thats important to you. I bought mine used for 350$.

Pick the one you like the look of the best - flow is a toss up; the both share the same lower, and the lower is the bottleneck. So the upper doesn't really matter. Aesthetics. Cost. Availability. Those should drive your decision among these two. The tubular upper on the GT40 weighs a few pounds less than the Cobra's upper casting....

The cam used in the test is a pretty mild one -- with more cam, and the ability to make more power up top, the other intakes would likely show more of an advantage -- but as you can see - you've got to be making significant power up beyond 5600-5800 rpm to take advantage of them.

The test also seems to de-bunk the notion that the stock manifold and the GT40 family are significantly better on the bottom end than some of the aftermarket units. Tom - any thoughts on this? One way to look at it might be that the Performer/BBK/TFS won't hurt you on the bottom -- and if you keep adding components for more flow, eventually they'll help you on the top. That would seem to point in the direction of buying the GT40/Cobra/Explorer if you can get a better deal on it and if the package you're putting together is all done by 5500 rpm.

Tom -- what are your thoughts?

I'm with Michael on this one. I do like the looks of the GT-40 and it is lighter and easier to bolt on than the Edelbrock with the side plate and center bolt.
If you can find a good deal on one then it might be the way to go.

How's everything else running Billy?

Get that fuel pressure gauge mounted yet?

I guess the Explorer would be the budget version willys - similar performance but with no GT40 aesthetic. If you have to pass emissions there in Jersey, be careful what year you get. Otherwise, keep saving your pennies.

No - Ford makes Explorers.

Does he port them? Yes -- the lower on the GT40, the Cobra and Explorer ARE ALL THE SAME.
