Guage Install

I got my guages in the mail today and wanted to install them. I have an electric fuel pressure guage and a machanical boost guage to install. I was just wondering where you guys ran the wires through the firewall, if theres a place already there so I wont have to drill. Where did you wire it to for the lights in the guages? Where should I attach the vacuum line to? Between the intake and fuel pressure regulator I assume? :shrug: Let me know guys!!! pics would be sweet if anybody has them.

I ran my wires/tubing through the port where the hood latch cable runs. Its kinda tricky under the hood, bacause it comes from the fender right near the brake booster. It may take a set of needle nose to pull the wires through.

As far as the fuel pressure, mine went right to my FPR, but you can use the fuel port on the rail with the correct adaptor I think. I have seen it done in 5.0 monthly a year ago. As far as the wiring, I wired my pillar to the headlight switch, just need a meter. I don't know the wire colors off hand, but I am sure someone here does. I ran my vac line to the A/C vac line off the T on the drivers fender. SEE PIC - I just bought a T at autozone. If you do this, don't push the tubing in till it stops. Leave it room or it will not read.

Can you have a BOOST gauge w/o a supercharger? :shrug: Or is it a vacuum gauge? Not trying to be an ass, just wondering.

I ran my wires through the grommet that was already in the firewall, comes out right below and next to the brake booster just like LoudToy said. I ran my lighting wires to the park lamp, MUCH easier than splicing into the headlight switch. Good luck, get us some pics when it's done!

The supercharger is in the mail (hopefully). I just figured I would put the guages in now since I have them rather than waiting and trying to do everything at once. I know it wont show any boost until the blower is in. Seems like a good enough idea to run the wires directly to the lamp, eliminating any confusion over which wire is which in the dash.

Awesome man, thanks! where does that cable come into the cabin? Below the dash? Right by the hood release I assume...
As for the Fuel pressure guage, I know it mounts to the regulator, I think the way I worded that was kinda confusing...Ive heard to mount the boost guage tube to the vacuum line between the intake and the fuel pressure regulator. Did you put the T in the vacuum line on the middle of the three vacuum lines that go to the splitter? Looks like it in that pic...thats what I was going to try to do. Thanks again...

Anybody know the color of the wires in the dash to tap into for power? :shrug:
 
:doh: For some reason I was thinking LoudToy ran his wires the same way I did, but he ran them somewhere different. If you look up above your pedals, you'll see a grommet that you can run them through.

I think you can hook up that gauge to any vacuum line, they all pull vacuum, so I would think it wouldn't matter which one you hooked it up to. Not positive though. :shrug: I also don't know what wire in the dash to splice into, although the only benefit from doing it that way is you can dim the gauges, but why would you want to do that? :p
 
I didn't really pay attention to the gauge you were installing. Its a boost gauge - mines is both really. I just wanted to be able to monitor my vaccuum. I had a leak once, and it was a tough troubleshoot. I don't know if you hood it up the same or not. I would go to the FPR port on the manifold for the boost gauge. Sorry. I should have read more in depth before rattling off my answer. I didn't know you had a super in the works there. Hope all goes well with your installs.........
 
The wire for the dimmer is in the corner of the headlight switch, but I cant recall which corner or what color it was. :bang: Toss a test light on one of the two wires which show 12 volts when the park lights are on, and dont when off, and see which one dims when the dimmer is run down.

Vac is great to have. It is a must on a SD car, like my 88. :D

I don't know if you have an aftermarket radio in your car or not, but with my guages I ran the power off the radio harness. It wasn't used with my radio and the gauges still light up and dim with the headlight switch

Does a red/yellow wire ring a bell? Ive been trying to decipher my electrical diagram in my Haynes manual...should be a fun time to figure out which one! :D

That does ring a bell but that means nothing. that color combo sticks in my mind because on an early aero fox, that is the color of the wire from the headlight switch to the MF switch. That could be why it sounds familiar.

Tossing a test light on it tells you in 2 seconds. :) That was all I did, and why it was not memorable.

There he is. I knew you were here somewhere.

I think that wire is blue or something like that. Not sure. Funny thing is, I used it a few months ago. Just meter it. Adjust the dimmer, and the voltage should go from about 12 slowly down to 0 when you adjust the dimmer........
