Had engine fire today.

Well right now I am as bummed as it gets. I went to change out the FPR today and thought I had all the pressure bled off and when I was removing the old one I got hosed with fuel. So after I got cleaned up I put the new one on tightened it down a bit and tried to crank it over and woosh fire. I grabbed the extinguisher which ran out in a whole 10 seconds and then grabbed the hose. I got the fire out with what it looks like not a whole lot of damage. I think what caused it was a loose wire on my o2 sensors that created a spark under the car where a little gas may have puddled. I dont know man but my head is all f**ked up right now. Im worried about water damage from everything being doused and the damage from the fire. I've got the insurance agent coming out tomarrow and i'll guess we'll see what happens.

man that sucks. I wouldnt worry about the water because many people pressure wash their engines to clean them. How much damage did it do? Melt any wires?

i caught the air filter on fire in my 66 one day i used to always spray starting fluid into the intake opening never had a problem one day i started it up and it was smoking i hoped out took the cover off and it was flaming away i was like **** and not thinking I stuck it back on the car and hoped in and shut it off and was freakign out i grabed it and threw it on the ground and started jumping on it. I was so scared my dad was gonna kill me cause it bubbled up the paint on the intake cover thing. I was lucky thats all it hurt. Hopefully your just as lucky and its fine water shouldn't hurt anything exstinglisher i'm not sure about what type did you use? Look on the bright side of it though you got it out before the whole car went up being a firefighter I can say i've seen a lot of car fires and they go up fast

The insurance may want to total it, i hope they dont but dont be surprised. Me and my buddy were in his 99 park ave and he gunned his engine while it was stuck in the snow. His engine caught fire, it didnt seem too bad. Yet they still wanted to total it because of the wiring damage. They said the car may have problems forever, weird stuff too. I wish you luck.

I purchased a glass see through filter for a Ford truck I had. The filter was wire tied to a couple of hoses. The hoses were just loose enough to bounce the filter against the valve cover and broke the glass. The heat from the headers was all it took to flash the gas. I had lots of melted wires, but it was a learning experience.

The damage doesnt really look that bad. The firewall was concentrated at the firewall so it melted alot of wireloom but to be honest I just got back in from looking at it the 9th time it really doesnt seem that bad. It seems more to me that I'm going to need new wiring. The underside of the hood and firewall are all sooted up and s**t but I got water on it in a matter of 30 seconds and the fire extinguisher I had on it within 10 seconds. What I'm leaning towards now is that fel puddled under the car and got all over the header wrap and somehow I got a spark and there it went.

man that blows. hope it turns out for the best.

and a leason to all. have a big fire extinguisher with you when you work with anything concering the fuel system. the cost of one is worth it's weight in gold.

I have a 2 liter bottle of water sitting in my car right now incase something happend while driving... I really need to get a fire extinguisher

Damn dude we all make through the winter and now ready to show and race the Stangs and bad luck! Sucks man but it could be a blessing in disguise for a new set up courteousy of insurance. Hope it all works out for you man.

When you said you bled the pressure, do you mean at the nozzle on the fuel rail? When I replaced my fuel lines, I just got some paper towels, bunched them around the nozzle, then put a couple over the top of it, got a small screwdriver, and pushed in the bleeder. Just let it run till the fuel stopped comin, then burned the towels. I was scared something might happen like what happened to you. That really sucks man...hope it works out.

No not through the Schraeder valve, my electric sending unit for my fuel pressure guage is there.

These stories scare me, thats why I bought a fire extinguisher just in case it ever happens while driving.

Lucky you HAD a fire extingisher handy. Most do not have one in the car OR at the house. I have 4 around the house & 1 in the cars, been there done that.

I had that happen to me when I was checking fuel pressure, the engine was still hot ( was trying out different fuel pressures on new maf and t/b) and it leaked and cought on fire right near the schrader valve. The only things I had to replace were the distributor, new wires, new f/p gauge, and the fuel lines that attatch to the lower intake ( still haven't done, but need to, burnt a little but not bad.) car runs fine after I replaced everything. Hope everything works out for you.
