haha, two stangs down in two days... (starter?)

ok, so now that the clutch on my 93 is cooked, what better time for my 89 gt to take a dump on me then now lol. anyways, heres the schpeel:

go into bank to cash check, come out and when i go to start it it cranks for a split second then clicks.

jumping it doesn't work, so i pull out my fluke and find out the battery is reading 12.7 volts...battery's good then right

then get the same reading when i put my prongs on the two pegs you use to jump the car on the solenoid. that would mean the cables are good then right (correct me if im wrong about any of this please)

change the solenoid and nothing changes, so my guess is maybe the starter now any suggestions would be great because with both cars down like this, im out of work lol. thanks everyone


edit: went and bridged the two big posts on the starter sloenoid and nothing happened but a bunch of sparks shot out

Just to verify the battery, crank the car over with the volt meter hooked up and see if the volts drop below 10 volts.

If this works out fine, give the starter a few taps and see if it'll crank over.

I will also say that it might be a good idea to add a thicker ground. Some people have problems with the ground in the back of the engine by the lower intake.

I'm thinking it's your starter (was hot and wouldn't crank even with a jump).

Fred is steering you in the right direction.
Remember that solenoids are funny - like your test across both lugs is pretty useless.
And remember that voltage doesnt indicate current-carrying capacity. That said, Fred's test of ensuring you stay above 10 volts is a good bench mark.

You can use a jumper cable as a motor ground for quick testing.

I remember a long time ago having a conversion about solenoids.... Your knowledge has definetly expanded . Keep it up Hissin.

Bang on that starter with something sizeable! The stock armature current starters are crap. If and when you replace the starter make sure you go with one out of a 94-95 car. Those PMGR (permanent magnet gear reduction) starters are smaller, higher torque, and draw less current. Plus they are not as affected by heat soak as the armature starters.

It could just be frozen up...so bang on it and try again. Maybe it will free up for you.

yeah, the only thing that sucks is that i have long tubes, so it looks like im gonna have to jack it up and get under there to even see the starter lol. i plan on trying to take care of this today so i'll update as i go. thank you very much for your help guys

Yup the LT's do make it a little more difficult to get under there. Another reason to go with the smaller, more compact PMGR starter. Good luck man.

well heres a little good news...it turned out to not be the starter, it was either the positive terminal or the cable from the starter to the solenoid, both were replace at the same time. either way, thank you guys for your help!
