Back when I was really poor I used a can of "chrome" spray paint on an instrument bezel, results were less than spectacular. So I removed the paint with Oven Cleaner (eats the paint but not the plastic) and tried again, this time putting it on the oven itself (after paint not with the oven cleaner on it ha!) and it turned out really nice, at least considering how "ghetto" the process was.
Bottom line was it could not really be cleaned or even touched without marks showing, but baking on the silver paint for a few hours at 160-170 degrees (the lowest temp my apartment oven could go) really did make a shine.
