i am a certified welder. it is possible to weld plastics. with proper preparation most any plastic can be repaired. grinding a "V" groove than braising or iron heating the area and laying new melted material in will produce a repair as strong as new. has anyone tried this ?
Well, since Ford is covering replacing the old design PI intakes that tend to crack, why would that be necessary? But it does sound like you know what you are doing and could make it work
yes a couple of guys tried this on another Mustang Forums @99-00 when the intakes were braking and no ford improved replacements were available. These were also some of the first guys to install the PI on the NPI heads...also read some info of a guy trying it on the t-bird forums. I don't believe they had much success.
I use to work with alot of plastics and started playing around with the process of welding plastic. one of the materials we use to grind alot was nylon. same base as most of the plastic intakes out on production cars. watching nylon burning up in the grinding process and melting seemed like it could be done but I failed many times trying to fix already molded finished products. nylon is a hard material to mold back together, i doubt it can work.
