87 Mustang GT...when lifting my rear hatch it is insanely heavy to lift and hold up and obviously the pistons dont even come close to holding the weight.....it has a saleen rear spoiler...I havent pulled it off yet but are they that heavy?

easy

I think pretty much every Mustang on this message board has had those hatch struts replaced at some point. Yes the hatch is VERY heavy.

When I bought both my 87 and 88 Mustangs they were shot and new hatch struts were my first mod. They were around $40 for the pair on Ebay I think. Very easy to install, you just need a regular tip screwdriver to pop off the clips.

yes the hatch is heavy. hence why notchbacks are lighter. you need new hatch struts (or lift supports as autoparts stores call them). any autoparts store will carry them.

+1 on the above. When I pulled my hatch out of 14 years of storage the hatch supports were shot. Autozone had Gabriel replacements in stock, made in USA, guaranteed for life for $15 each. Done deal.
