Head Gasket Diagnosis( Will this work)

Just got off the phone with a mecahic...he states a good way to check head gasket failure (besides the normal water in oil, ect) is to take the belt off (thus the water pump doesnt pump), take the thermostat and the housing off, and crank the car up and watch for bubbles coming out of the thermostat housing, thus air is getting by on what should be a closed system...does this make sense???????

Wouldnt a compression test give you the same results?

Done the compression test 1105,,,all cylinders seemed fine,,,150 psi range,,,I did not do a leak down test though......

Compression test wont work if its blown between the cylinder and water port.. normally the blows are small and you get only a small amount of the air sqeezing through. Ive seen this befor and what he is telling you might work but you can go to a mechanice shop and they have a piece that goes in place of yoru radiator cap.. it takes a pressure reading and that will let you know right there if you have a blown head gasket. You can also run a leak down test. What problems are you having that makes you think its a head gasket problem?

air in the coolant that cant be "burped" out,,,,bubbles are very small and frequent.....always air in the radiator......air bubbles are very pronounced after thermostats open.......

Small bubbles yes. Is it running hot? Have you driven it at all?

yeah..ive driven it....temp gauge stay at N when cruising...will occasionally rise to R in stop/go traffic, then thermostat finally opens up and it coools back down.....

1. take out a plug.
2. get a air gun and somthing to seal the plug hole and gun so you can pump the cyl. full of air. (will need about 90psi.)
3. take off rad. cap
4. Pump air into each cyl.
5. look for bubbles in coolant

THis way is much easyer, and at about 90psi will tell you what if any problems there are with the gasket.
