i want to wrap my headers. i have hooker comp long tubes out of my 289. ive heard the wrap helps with heat. im not concerrned about my engine compartment as much as inside my cab. it gets really hot in there.

has anybody wrapped long tubes? can anybody tell me about the wrap? and how much wrap do i need to buy to do both headers?

thanks

What other forms of insulation do you have as i have heard that wrapping headers can cause them to rust out at the wrap can hold moisture.

You'll need at least one roll of the 2" wide wrap for two long tube headers plus a way to hold the insulation on. I wrapped a Civic header and it took about half a roll and I used hose clamps to hold it all on. Keep in mind to wear a junky long-sleev shirt and some tough latex or Nitrile goves if you can. Its VERY uncomfortable to get the fiberglass on your skin.

As far ar rusting, the wrap stayed on the Honda for two years and the header actually rusted less than with none at all(less exposed to atmospheric moisture), but it would act like a sponge in a wet climate. There are also rumors that it can hold in too much heat and cause the headers to crack, but I have yet to hear of an actual case.

The heat retention causes the headers to become brittle and they become more susceptible to cracking.

100% agree. Don't do it if you value your headers! If you're worried about heat inside the cabin, get some insulation for inside.
This ia an Australian brochure but I'm sure you can find something like it locally. A Stainless Steel heat shield between the pipes and the floor help also.

Do not wrap the headers. Ceramic coating is the way to go.
When the wrap gets wet it will retain the moisture and hold it close to the exhaust to start the early rust process. You probably will not have to worry about that though because the headers will get brittle from getting too hot and they will crack way before they will rust through. I speak from experience.

if you look at header wrap in the summit catalog they carry a disclaimer stating that the use of it will void most manufacturers warranties.
i jet-hot coated the header on my mr2 s/c and i couldn't believe the difference it made in that tight engine compartment.

i asked some of my instructers at school(UTI) and they said pretty much what you guys are saying. the wrap holds moisture and it will ruin the headers pretty quick. i guess part of our school is sponsored by Jet Hot and we get a little break in price, and they are only a few miles away so i think ill have to go with that. thanks guys
