Header Wrap (just let me explain)

Hey another discussion on Header wrap. Yea I know this stuff is crap and can cause rust BUT LET ME EXPLAIN. I have a set of Tri Y headers that I have been dying to get on my car, but I dont want to shell out $300 dollars on jet hot or powder coating and I want some way to keep engine heat down to not loose HP/TQ or MPG. SO I looked up and found that POR has a high temp coating, and I was wondering if it is possible to coat the headers in this stuff then wrap the headers THEN I was planning on coating the wrap with this spray that summit and other places sell that is meant to seal out moisture and withstand high temps. Also, has anyone with a 69/70 stang have Tri headers on their car and had to use the power steering drop bracket? If so how hard was this process and how much did you torque the bolts to?

Instead of doing all that you are much better off just Jet Hotting them honestly. You will not like the looks or long term results of doing it a half-assed way.

true. I am still in college, so I was planning on spending $50 for a small upgrade and make it look decent, then after college I would start restoring her.

The header wrap doesn't "promote rust", it overheats the metal (650f for carbon steel) and they just flake away. On a budjet (who isn't) take your time preping them and just paint them. Protect the starter and fuel from the heat and you will be fine.

I've got header wrap on my turbo kit's hotside(mild steel). No problems yet, but I also ceramic coated the tubing inside and out to help protect it.

I didn't want to use the wrap, but with all of that exhaust tubing in the engine compartment, I needed to do something drastic.

Some comments:
- If you use ultra high temp paint (VHT 1500* stuff or ceramic if you have the equipment) to protect the tubing, you should be fine. I don't have a lot of miles on the turbo, but so far the piping still looks mint.

- The header wrap isn't cheap. You'll probably end up spending $75-100 by the time you are done. If you think about it... ceramic isn't all that much more.

I guess you shouldn't use JetHot then. AirBorn Coatings (started by chemist of the original ceramic coating company, HPC) charges $235 for a full inside/out coating on a full length header, and with them being Tri-Y's, they might charge you shortie or block hugger prices ($195/$185).
