Heres the scoop. I have a 1972 351w. I tried to put a waterpump (aluminum) from a 1986 F-150 5.8 on it. No go, the coolant passages are differant. SO, I swallowed my pride bought a pump for a 351w in 1972 car. Coolant passages fit. Cool. It is cast iron but ok. Painted all up and was hanging accesories tonight. The damn bolt pattern for my serp belt underdrives is differant! So where do I get a pump that fits the early cover and has the correct blot holes for serp belts or dual bolt patterns, AND is standard rotation? I only have an alternator. :bang: :bang: :bang:

I'm not sure if there is a cover that you are looking for. I'm running a newer cover on my motor with the block off for the fuel pump but i'm running a 302 reverse rotation water edelbrock water pump. I also only have altenator. I use the tensioner as an idler now though. Good luck.
mike.

Here is what I want ideally:
Serpentine belt, just alternator. Alternator tensions it. (old style adjusting bracket, got that)
keep my old style 1972 cover (just painted the damn motor)
I also painted the water pump, but oh well, I'll take it off (again)
What would fix my current delema: a water pump that fits the old style cover AND has dual bolt patterns for the water pump pulley, as serpentine pulleys use a differant bolt pattern.
I guess I may have to go V-belt. I just thought serpentine would bring my old car a more up to date look. :notnice:

The bolt holes on my underdrives are like 2" apart across the center. The water pump holes are like 1 3/4". I went out to my new $50.00 parts heap, 1987 mercury marquis, and low and behold the water pump pulley is a small (1 3/4") pattern too! It has a serpentine belt, and a grooved pulley on the water pump. If I use this pulley instead of my underdrive unit (about the same size anyhow) I may be ok.
PROVIDING THE OFFSET IS CORRECT. Tomarrow will tell.

Well, it told.....the Marquis pulley has the correct bolt pattern, but the offset is way wrong. SO.....I carefully marked and drilled my brand new billet underdrive water pump pulley for dual bolt pattern. Looks real good, hope it holds together. Good news is its lighter.
