help ASAP starting issue

This problem has gradually been increasing over the past couple of weeks. When I start the car the rpm's jump up and then the car will die. I can get it to run by giving it some gas when starting. To me this does not make sense and I can't figure out what the problem is. If anybody has any suggestions that would be greatly appreciated.

when was the last time ford messed with your computer? Assuming you don't have a predator or SCT you might need a reflash from Ford, theres a TSB out for crappy idle, there should be a sticker under the hood (on the hood) that says what version of software they have loaded up.

I have not done anything to the motor in almost two years, why would I need a reflash.

There was an issue with the PI 4.6s with the factory tune. They just started reflashing last year with another update. There were 2 updates since 03 that I know of.

Does it seem like an IAC problem? Does it just crank then fall right back down?

Yes it just cranks and dies right back down and I just found a similar thread on this so I cleaned the IAC and I will see if that helps.

+1 it does sound like IAC failure, or possibly a crack in the manifold.

oh thought I read that you;d cleaned the IAC allready. Hopefully that fixes it, if not I'd call Ford and see if your computer needs to be updated... they probly won't do it though since your warranty is long gone

YOu need to start the troubleshooting process with the basics. Check for DTC's and check the fuel pressure. Most likely, one of these will start leading you down the correct path. Good luck.
