HELP, cant get distributor / oil pump shaft to line up

the oil pump shaft on my 88 lx is not centered and wont stay centered and i cant get it to fit in the distributor. i had to pry at it with a screw driver. i have almost got it centered to where it looks like it should fit but i cant get the thing in there. then when i go back and look at it its off to the side again. my distributor went bad a week ago, then i used my brothers just so i could move the car, then i installed another stock one today that i just got. i have been putting dizzys on and off. when i went to put on the new stock one it wouldnt go on, then it fell in. i drove the car around but it needed to be timed. there was not enough adjustment so i took the dizzy out one more time to readjust and now i can not get it back on because the oil pump shaft is not centered. i managed to get a long extention with a small socket on the end of it (taped up) and was able to get that on the oil pump shaft and turn it but i cant get the dizzy on there. it was getting me very frustrated so i walked away from it tonight but i dont know what to do... is there any thing I can do or things you guys would try before i have to take the oil pan off and make this thing sit straight. i can see a little clip or washer, where should this thing be? all the way at the top of the shaft? is it possible to center this thing from inside the dizzy hole? please help i could use your guys advise before i go crazy.

i can get the shaft to be centered but once the dizzy touches it it flops off to the side. do u guys know why it wont stay centered without moving?

i used the assembly lube and that keeps it in the center to where i can get the dizzy on it and it falls down a little bit but still wont go all the way down. whats the best method to turning the engine by hand? does this mean i will have to take off my fan and shroud?

yeah i think that is the problem is that it is not in the oil pump all the way.

so far the car is on jack stands with the oil pan unbolted. im gonna need a new pan gasket as well. you think it would be possible to do it in the car? i dont really want to pull the motor. is it possible to get the pan out of there if i jack up the motor or is it always gonna be in there no matter how far i jack it up?
