Hello all, i have a issue with my 1990 5.0, when im pulling up to a light and gearing down into second the engine dies, it starts up fine again and then its fine for a bit then does it again. Its at Ford and they can't figure it out, last year it did not do that but it had a high idle issue, its really starting to bug me. Really no mods to the car other than air intake, tps sensor has been changed mass air sensor too as well as the iac motor, plugs and fuel filter all new. What the hell is going on with this thing any help would be great.

Thanks all!

I had a problem like this once. Believe it or not, it was a fuel pressure issue.

I didn't fix it, personally. This problem happened many years ago before I knew anything about the cars at all.

An adjustment of the fuel regulator sorted it out though.

Dump the codes and see what the computer says is wrong…Codes may be present in the computer even if the Check Engine light isn’t on.

Here's the link to dump the computer codes with only a jumper wire or paper clip and the check engine light, or test light or voltmeter. I’ve used it for years, and it works great.

See http://www.troublecodes.net/Ford/
OR
See http://www.mustangworks.com/articles/electronics/eec-iv_codes.html

IF your car is an 86-88 stang, you'll have to use the test lamp or voltmeter method. There is no functional check engine light on the 86-88's except possibly the Cali Mass Air cars.

Codes have different answers if the engine is running from the answers that it has when the engine isn't running. It helps a lot to know if you had the engine running when you ran the test.

Trouble codes are either 2 digit or 3 digit, there are no cars that use both 2 digit codes and 3 digit codes.

For those who are intimidated by all the wires & connections, see http://www.actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16153 for what a typical hand scanner looks like. Normal retail price is about $30 or so at AutoZone or Wal-Mart.

Or for a nicer scanner see http://www.midwayautosupply.com/pc-7208-90-equus-digital-ford-code-reader-3145.aspx – It has a 3 digit LCD display so that you don’t have to count flashes or beeps.. Cost is $30.

Look for codes 27 & 29, VSS Sensor. It is an electronic sender mounted on the speedo pickup gear on the trans. It works the cruse control for both 5 speed and auto trans cars. It tells the computer to speed up the idle slightly as you slow down to a stop to keep the engine from stalling. Check to see if the electrical connector is plugged into it. Cost is under $30 and it is easy to replace.

If you have a paper clip to jumper the wires and are reasonably intelligent, you can know.

ok so even though there are no codes showing up now does not mean there are none there, is it like the memory fills up and cant take any more codes til you clear it?

thanks again for your help.

My 93GT was dying randomly at stop lights. It would usually fire right back up. Tried to pull codes and couldn't get it to go into diagnostic mode. Turned out to be a bad computer. Swapped in a new puter, and all was good. Now, 6 months later, it is starting to die again. Gonna pull codes tonight.

Maybe someone can verify this but I have been told that dirty throttle body and egr can cause this problem also. Is your car and AOD?? Mine is doing this occationally also and I have a tune up planned, to include cleaning the TB and EGR. Will let ya know if this solves my problem.

My car is doing the exact same thing, I have also been told it could be the VSS so Iam going to give that a shot.
