Proper proceedure is to solvent flush the system to remove the old oil. See http://jrichker.stangnet.com/Mustang_tech/R134a_conversion/R134a_conversion.htm for details on R134a conversion done the right way.

works every time

replace the accumulator, you cant get the old oil out of it,replace the orifice line, blow out the condenser and hoses with compressed air, fill compressor with PAG oil and turn comp over to flush it out. on the radiator support is a decal with fill amounts of R-12. R134 take a little more and use PAG oil.it is weighed in ozs. not psi. also use new green (oiled) o-rings and evac the system to -30psi. your old accumulator contains mixed oil and likely plugged up. also r134 hoses have a teflon barrier in them as does the comp seals. r134 will eventually seep through the hoses and the comp seal. a r134 comp solves this problem.

Use ester oil instead. Ester oil is believed to actually seal the non-barrier hoses preventing R-134a from seeping out. Did a conversion on a Grand Marquis 5.0 and got 38 out of the vents.

Keep in mind that your R-134 charge should only be about 75 % of the R-12 charge. I've been doing retro-fits for about three years for Ford, and the reason is that R-134 molecules are much smaller and expand under heat at aviolent rate compared to R-12. It would be easy to overcharge the system, and I know from experience that those 'kits' are very general and are supposed to fit many applications. A normal 5.0 Mustang takes 1.75 lbs of R-12 and should work perfectly with 1.25 lbs of R-134.
Also, the accululator should be replaced because the decessant bag (strainer) inside is soaked with R-12 oil, which will not mix with R-134 oil. Therefore rendering the accumulator almost completely useless.
It sounds like your compressor is trying to freeze up due to lack of oil, which should have had no more than 3 oz of new oil installed, or it is overcharging, due to an overcharge of R-134, or a partially blocked orifice tube. I have seen comressors shut an engine down, and even a compressor that seems to be working perfect, if overcharged, will rob up to 30 horsepower! Something to think about! Good luck.

This whole process seems to be one huge pain in the buttocks. Never the less, I'm considering doing the swap to my 86 (considering that I have to break open the AC anyway for the instalation of my SC). My question is this: Aside from the cost of R12 vs. R134-A, is there any advantage to doing the swap?

never ever use any kind of stopleak in an a/c system because just like cooling system stopleak it stops up everything else and ruins more than it fixes.
