Help, I'm out of parts to replace! -- Electrical

Alright, one more dumb question before I start hacking wires and yanking parts. The third wire from my regulator that doesn't go to my alternator, should that be ohming to ground? My meter shows it as going to ground, doesn't this mean I have a short somewhere down the line on THIS wire?

Don't hack any wires yet till you find out if a new wiring harness you make up works, (it's a 30-45 min. job) if it does then you have a short most likely in the "old wires" and can just unhook or hack them to break the short.

Tape and mark any wires you unhook and note their location disconnected from, also since your not going to cut them out yet cover any wire end that still may be "hot" with elec. going thru it with tape.

Check and see if your regulator body is "not grounded" to the cars body, it would have rubber in the holes to keep it from having contact when screwed down. If your car requires that type of regulator then you may have a ground wire from the regulator, I don't know for sure on your year 66.

Mine is 68, my regulator body is grounded to fenderwell, there is no ground wire on it. Make up a temporary harness like I said and if all your parts are working order it should be charging after.

ok one more stupid question. where is the selenoid. is it on my starter.

Here's a pic of what it looks like, should be right next to your battery on your fenderwell. It will have an S and an I on the smaller terminals.

thanks

Thanks a ton lot for all the help everybody. I REALLY appreciate the time your spent to share your experise. After doing a temp rewiring job I'm still only getting 12.5 volts. I think I'm going to get the alternator tested to make sure I didn't fry it & if that doesn't do it I'm gonna haveto find a mechanic. Anyways thanks again for all the help. It.s been fun tearing into the electrical.

P.S. jds68stang do you have a paypal accnt?

LOL, no but I wouldn't accept anything anyways, if that's what your implying, ty anyway, glad to help you out if I can.

Good idea to test the alt. again and try one more regulator before giving up also, I believe they are only around $20 for a cheap one and if that doesn't work you should be able to return it if it's not scratched up.
(there is no test for a regulator at the auto store to answer an earlier question you had)

Just make sure you UNHOOKED and marked locations of the old harness for the test, leaving any of the old wires connected during the test could cause a failure (I forgot to clarify that before but assumed they would be left off)

Good luck on the next try, let us know how you make out.

I took my alt down & made them test it. I'd managed to fry it. I got a new one, & hooked it up. I did have to hook up the old wire to the solenoid as well as the new one, but now I'm charging again. I may eventually clean up my wiring, but it's working again :hail2:

Nice to hear it:nice: , aren't these electrical problems a joy when they happen:bang: LOL
Yea, when you get time make up a decent harness and wrap it up good with
electrical tape.
Glad ur back on the road again.

Since you figured your problem out, I'd like to hijack for a question.
I'm having similar problems but I saw a different diagram floating around. When I hooked up according that diagram, I have

Regulator Alternator
A to Battery and starter solenoid (positive)
S to Stator
F to Field

but I get no charging from my system. Any ideas? The "I" on the voltage regulator is blocked off so I don't have anything attached here but it should still function or am I wrong on that?
