Don't hack any wires yet till you find out if a new wiring harness you make up works, (it's a 30-45 min. job) if it does then you have a short most likely in the "old wires" and can just unhook or hack them to break the short.

Tape and mark any wires you unhook and note their location disconnected from, also since your not going to cut them out yet cover any wire end that still may be "hot" with elec. going thru it with tape.

Check and see if your regulator body is "not grounded" to the cars body, it would have rubber in the holes to keep it from having contact when screwed down. If your car requires that type of regulator then you may have a ground wire from the regulator, I don't know for sure on your year 66.

Mine is 68, my regulator body is grounded to fenderwell, there is no ground wire on it. Make up a temporary harness like I said and if all your parts are working order it should be charging after.

Here's a pic of what it looks like, should be right next to your battery on your fenderwell. It will have an S and an I on the smaller terminals.

Thanks a ton lot for all the help everybody. I REALLY appreciate the time your spent to share your experise. After doing a temp rewiring job I'm still only getting 12.5 volts. I think I'm going to get the alternator tested to make sure I didn't fry it & if that doesn't do it I'm gonna haveto find a mechanic. Anyways thanks again for all the help. It.s been fun tearing into the electrical.

LOL, no but I wouldn't accept anything anyways, if that's what your implying, ty anyway, glad to help you out if I can.

Good idea to test the alt. again and try one more regulator before giving up also, I believe they are only around $20 for a cheap one and if that doesn't work you should be able to return it if it's not scratched up.
(there is no test for a regulator at the auto store to answer an earlier question you had)

Just make sure you UNHOOKED and marked locations of the old harness for the test, leaving any of the old wires connected during the test could cause a failure (I forgot to clarify that before but assumed they would be left off)
