Help! Key Broke off in the ignition, what do I do???

I was able to get the broken peice out but, now I have 1 broken key. Can I just go to a key maker and have me make a new one? Or do I have to go to the dealer to get a new one, were 96 keys's coded? Plus now I have no car to drive, is there any way to start it, or am I gonna have to get it towed to the dealer to have a new key made, it was my only key. Is there anyway around this so I dont have to shell out all this money for a dang key plusPlus I wont have a car for a few days? Any help is appreciated!

if the car is pats equiped you will have to have it towed to the dealer.

96 were pats equipped.
1. is the ignition key cylinder usuable if you were to make a key? if so, then just place the old key with the chip in the plastic part near the black ring of the ignition key cylinder. make a new key, and youll be ok. only bad thing is if someone tries to start your car, it will start right up.

Actually, I believe the 96 lets you make master and slave keys at home. Get a blank PATS key and have a key maker copy it, then search Google for information on the PATS system. You can (basically) copy the firmware off your master key onto a new key.

The procedure is a little different between making master and slave keys. But this way you don't have to have a whole new ignition installed.

Problem is that you need to be able to put the master key into the ignition and be able to turn it. If you can't do that, you'll have to tow it to the dealer or spend a fortune trying to do a soldering job strong enough to keep the key from breaking again.

EDIT: Here's the site with the procedure. Works on 96-98 Mustangs.

Worse case, you could send out your EEC to have the PATS disabled.

Where is the EEC located? Where would I send this out to?

Based on the link that was provided above, since you have a 96... you might be in luck and be able to reprogram a cut key to be your master key... read the article linked above.

how broken is the key? Try using a pair of vice-grips to either get the key out of the ignition, or to turn the key to drive the car hehe

I did this on my old Saturn and had to have the starter replaced. Ouch.
