As per the questions you asked, I have no idea why an alternator would cause all these problems but I guess it does.

Great to hear you figured out the problem Kyle! Now it's time for a bigger/better alternator.

ok me and klye have been talking about his problem and he thinks i'm crazy. If theres water in your dizzy and you start your engine it can throw your timing. I know this because my toyota truck before it was mine it was my dad's and he washed the engine without covering the dizzy and is totally screwed the timing. He had to get the timing chain replaced to fix it. But our turbo wonder boy here (LOL) thinks I'm on crack. So what do you guys say? If everybody thinks i'm nuts i want a damn good reason why they say you have to cover that thing.

I'm not saying thats his problem but its something to look at if nothing else fixes it

i don't see any way water would throw the ignition timing "off" it would cause spark scatter etc.......but once you dry it out or replace the cap, rotor, etc. there is not way that it should still be affected. As far as the toyota truck having to have another timing chain because of water..... that is just inconceivable. i might understand it if it backfired, ran rough, or something like that and jumped timing, but not just from getting wet.

Jinx as i said, there is no way water will physically cause the base timing to change, and no way cause the timing chain to break....i mean the timing chain is driven off a complete diffrent part of the cam. And how is water gonna magically turn the 1/2 bolt at the base of the Dist. and then magically clock the housing? Maby you guys have special "water" down there in PA?

As for my problem, im 95% sure its the alt. As i said, it ran fine with it disconnected, and on the batt charger, however at one point it started to bog, and not hold revs, then it came back, my only thinking is that it was my batt charger cycling (which it does, on for a while then off for a while, etc)...so i think im in the clear on buying a new one...(damn this is costing me a lot of money, for no power increase!) Mystry Machine said i could bring my ALT to a parts store and they could test it, but i wonder if the tester they have will pick up whats wrong....i mean it still seems to charge.....anyhow, thanks again guys

mech. have been known to lie about stuff, they don't take an oath as a priest does. just and FYI, i merely stating my thoughts on it anyway.......and i am with you Kyle....

I would check the voltage regulator, it may be starving the ignition for power or something(just a thought i am not an expert), i do know around here you can get a starter and alternator shop to go through you alternator or starter and have it rebuilt better than new for less than a new one....... maybe something to look into since you mentioned the budget thing. I know i had mine redone(everything new) and upgreaded to 160 amps for just over 100$, and the upgraded was most of the price..

Answer my question then WTF do you have to cover it if it don't hurt anything

Urban, you should buy a bunch of alts and sell them to members here - A new alt around here is double the price you quoted and reman'd units (puke) are 150-ish+.

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking once the alternator issue was brought up. Take it to a local generator bench shop & have it checked. There's too much involved to "do it yourself".

My primary MOS (Army) is working on alternator, generators, starters, etc. A multimeter will get you a long way, but there's no way I could even check it out completely without the equipment they use (test stands). EX: "problem with armature assembly" ..... this sounds like a total mechanical issue .... however, it can be electrical, as there are certain continuity requirements within that have to be met.

Point is .... I'd take it to a shop & save $$ if I were you.

It was a thought. It happend in the past. You yourself say you don't know if it could happen so don't sit there and say it can't. And if you don't want people to give ideas on how to fix a car then don't post that you need help.
